A Word from The Writer: The Monday Analysis - 9 January 2006 A wild Wild Card Weekend! Road teams rule. And a wild time was had by all at the Razor. Let's check out the world champs playing a Florida team in the cold. Patriots Slam Jacksonville, Jags Roll Over, Play Dead At the half with a score of 7-3 in favor of the world champs, if looked as if the AFC Wild Card game at Gillette would turn out to be a defensive struggle, a slugfest between two teams playing lousy offense. The problem is that Jacksonville stayed in the locker room during the half, and the Patriots made their appropriate adjustments to rake in a 28-3 win. Tom Brady (15-27 fro 201 yards and 3 TDs, 116.4 rating) played a sloppy first half, and the running game was segregated to Kevin Faulk with 6 carries for 51 yards. Faulk also had 4 receptions for 45 yards. Corey Dillon was unproductive with 17 carries for 40 yards. The Defenses poured on the heat, keeping it a tight game in the first half. "The outcome is what is important and we won the game," Dillon said after
the game. "Whenever I get As part of the audience at the Razor Saturday night, I can tell you the place was rocking, right from the start with Boston's own Kay Hanley (formerly of Letters to Cleo) singing the National Anthem to fireworks and muskets a blazing. The Krafts also poured on the big guns, fireworks going off in the practice field after each touchdown, and it seemed like it was a heavily battled war going on Route 1 later in the evening. The second half started off guns a blazing, when Brady found David Givens in the endzone for a 3 yard touchdown pass. Four minutes later, Brady found tight end Ben Watson for a 63 yard touchdown reception, one that broke two tackles. A few minutes after that, Asante Samuel picked off Byron Leftwich for a 73 yard touchdown. Willie McGinest had a monster game with 4.5 sacks, giving him 16 lifetime in the postseason. Both figures are now NFL records. Rosevelt Colvin also had a nice sack, and Richard Seymour tagged teamed one with McGinest. The Patriots have now won 10 consecutive post season games, an NFL record. Bill Belichick is 11-1 in the post season, also a record. "Jacksonville is a very physical team, tough football team," said head coach Bill Belichick after the game, "and the first half, 7-3, was a hard fought half. Fortunately, we were able to put a good drive together there in the third quarter to make some plays and play pretty competitively on defense." Tedy Bruschi dressed for the game, but never saw a snap. He wasn't needed. Monty Beisel and Mike Vrabel handled the middle linebacking slots just fine all night. Leftwich was the leading rusher with 26 yards on three attempts. Fred Taylor was held to 8 carries for 24 yards. We're off to Denver, and hopefully a better outcome than what happened in
October. Black Monday Extended: More Coaching Vacancies Black Monday is extended, and here's the latest: Jim Haslett was FINALLY fired from the New Orleans Saints after a 3-13 season. The Bills FINALLY fired GM and President Tom Donahue. Owner Ralph Wilson, 87, resumed the president title, and apologized Buffalo fans for not being more competitive in the past five years. And to add to the blast from the past, hall of fame coach Marv Levy is back with the Bills as VP of Football operations. Levy, 81, took the Bills to four straight Super Bowls, all losses. The Bills also fired offensive coordinator Tom Clements, defensive line coach Tim Krumrie, Don Blackmon (linebackers), Steve Szabo (defensive backs) and Frank Verducci (offensive line). The Raiders fired head coach Norv Turner after two seasons, and compiling a 9-23 record. Herman Edwards will indeed become the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. The switch was speculated earlier in the season, and Edwards has two years left on his contract with the Jets. However, he told his staff this past Thursday he would no return to New Jersey regardless if a deal could be made between the Jets and Chiefs. As a result, the Chiefs need only to hand over a fourth round pick for Edwards. The Viking replaced Mike Tice is just under a week, hiring Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress. Childress has been the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia since 2002. Prior, he was the Eagles' quarterbacks coach since 1999. The Eagles hired former Lions head coach Marty Mourningweg as Offensive Coordinator. Washington Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams was taken out the running for any head coach positions when Washington extended his contract with a three year, $8 million deal. Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells said he would return for the 2006 season. Parcells and the Cowboys also agreed to a two-year extension, keeping his the head coach in Dallas through the 2007 season.
Wild Card Weekend Break Down Panthers (12-5) 23, GIANTS (11-6) 0 - FINAL: Blanked! Carolina had so much control of this game, Tiki Barber said after the game that it was as if the Panthers Defense was in the Giants' huddle on every play. Manning No. 3 looked more like a 15 year-old than ever, tossing 3 INTs, two to Marlon McCree alone, and fumbling once. Time of possession was a huge problem: Panthers held the ball for 42:45 compared to the Giants at 17:15. Can't do anything if you don't have the ball. Steelers (12-5) 31, BENGALS (11-6) 17 - FINAL: Carson Palmer goes out on the second play from scrimmage, later results as a torn ACL, out for the game, out for the season. Jon Kitna comes in, drives the Bengals to 17 points. Second half, all Steelers. Trick plays, big plays, the football Gods send the rough and tough Pittsburgh Brawlers, I mean Steelers to beat up the Colts. Note to Tony Dungy: Pittsburgh knocked out four Bengals in the first quarter. Good luck next week, coach. Redskins (11-6) 17, BUCCANEERS (11-6) 10 - FINAL: Strange, strange game. Tampa held the ball longer (34:29 to 25:31) and out played them with total yards (243 to 120 yards), but the Redskins did all the scoring they needed in the first half, including two touchdowns in the first quarter. Jon Gruden's Bucs could never catch up. PATRIOTS (11-6) 28, Jaguars 3 (12-5) - FINAL: Tight Defensive struggle in the first half, and Tom Brady was sloppy. Suddenly, everything changed at half time. The Patriots caught some rhythm; the Jaguars never did, and it was Patriots dominance for thirty minutes.

Patriots News Willie McGinest was selected as the Patriots 12th Player for 2005. The award is given by the Kimberly-Clarke Corporation to the player who best personifies team spirit. Voting is conducted through Shaws Supermarkets, and former recipients include Troy Brown, Dan Klecko, Adam Vinatieri, and Tedy Bruschi...Guard Ryan Krug was re-signed to the practice squad...Patriots quarterback Doug Flutie was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his drop kick for an extra point in Sunday's game over the Dolphins. The drop kick was the first in the NFL since 1941. The award is the fifth of Flutie's NFL career, and first on special teams...The Patriots' recipient of the 2005 Ed Block Courage Award is none other than LB Tedy Bruschi. The Block Award goes to a player from each team, and all are honored at the 28th annual Ed Block Courage Awards on Tuesday, March 7 in Baltimore. League Notes The League set another regular season attendance record in 2005, selling 17,011,986 tickets, about 11,000 more than were sold in 2004. The tickets sold represent approximately 90 percent of the available tickets of the stadium capacity around the league, and averages 66,453 fans per game... The Associated Press named the following award winners: League MVP - Shaun Alexander, RB Seattle The Monday Analysis Annual Awards Dumbest looking Quarterback - Eli Manning, NJ Giants Signs of the Apocalypse For all their (or rather his) popularity in Boston and in the Baseball world, Johnny Damon and his wife Michelle (who is the second wife, by the way; he left the first one after she had twins) are two of the most disturbing looking people ever to walk into Yankee Stadium - possibly the world in general. They look plastic, and a little like a couple of aliens. I think he should have left the beard. And maybe her, too. Notes and Quotes Willie McGinest had 4.5 sacks in Saturday night's game. A new NFL
record. Top Ten List of the Week 1. Nice win on Saturday night. The entire league knows it is not an off year for the World Champs. Certainly not an off post season. 2. Memo to Eli Manning: Please report to the Giants Front Office and Training Facilities. You have missed your first playoff game. 3. I can't wait to see Carolina up in Chicago, the two toughies fighting it out, and if there is any team gutsy enough to give a home team a run for their money, it is Carolina. 4. Quick hiring by Minnesota. Ya' think Zygi Wilf had Brad Childress in mind for a while? 5. The Jets are screwing themselves with Herm Edwards going to Kansas City. Every other team has given up multiple draft picks (i.e. high draft picks, like first rounders) and lots of cash. What are the Jets getting? A fourth. Oh boy, those Jets are really a competitive bunch. 6. The Steelers did what they had to this week, play physical. That same game plan may save them against Indy next week. 7. Tough break for Cinci, and Marvin Lewis wasn't happy about losing Carson Palmer. The replayed showed the truth - just a freak accident. 8. If I were the Colts and Tony Dungy, I'd put an order in for extra padding. 9. Buffalo may be ran by old guys, but it's better than Tom Donahue. It's about time Ralph Wilson took back control of his team. 10. The Raiders should have the hardest time hiring. Until Al Davis leaves the organization, or it changes enough internally, I don't see any head coach wanting to go there, unless they are desperate like Norv Turner. And even then, I would pass. 9 January 2006 | ||
