A Word from The Writer: The Monday Analysis - 5 December 2005 Winter is here. Snow games, the Christmas music in full-swing, houses lit up with tiny lights. And the march to the playoffs begins. But first, a stop in the awards zone. Brady Named 2005 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Michael Jordan. Lance Armstrong. Tiger Woods. The 2004 Boston Red Sox. Cal Ripkin, Jr. Don Shula. Joe Montana. Arthur Ashe. Jack Nicklaus. Muhammad Ali. Bobby Orr. Carl Yastrzemski. Edwin Moses. MaryLou Retton. Sugar Ray Leonard. Pete Rozelle. Sandy Koufax. And now New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady. The above names were Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. Brady is the Sportsman of the Year for 2005. "It really is a great award, a great honor," Brady said on Friday. "I think of the people that have won. I remember when Michael Jordan won, Joe Montana, Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, the Red Sox last year. It’s really an honor." Brady beat out a slew of contenders including his own head coach Bill Belichick and former coordinator Charlie Weis, now head coach of Notre Dame for SI's Top Spot. Brady has been the magic man in New England, the first since Doug Flutie played for Boston College, since taking over the starting position in 2001 and leading the Patriots to their first ever Super Bowl. It would be the first of three. Brady was named Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl XXXVI and XXXVIII. His top receiver, Deion Branch, captured the honor in Super Bowl XXXIX. Of course, in Brady-like fashion, he remembered everyone else. "It is an individual award. But the reason I’m at this point now is because I’ve been around a lot of great people," he said. "There’s been a lot of hard work by me and the people around me that support me. There are a lot of people that have always been there for me to rely on, and they’re the reason I’m in my sixth year." The Monday Analysis congratulates Brady on the top honor. Vinatieri Passes Cappelletti Patriots Kicker, "Mr. Clutch" Adam Vinatieri passed Gino Cappelletti for the all-time points leader spot for the Patriots. Cappelletti played for the Patriots from 1960 - 1970, and his record 1,170 points held true until Sunday, when Vinatieri kicked a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter to pull ahead. "This is a significant milestone for Adam at this particular point," Cappelletti said after the game. "But in time it will be an insignificant milestone, because I hope we're all around here watching him make his 2,000th point." "When you amass as many points as Gino Cappelletti has in your career it means a couple of things," Vinatieri said. "One, you've been on very successful teams. And you've been around a long time." Congratulations to both Adam and Gino on their tremendous accomplishments for the Patriots. Patriots Nation salute both of you. Pats Pathetic at Times, but Jets Worse 16-3 is a pretty good defensive win, a much needed strong effort for this team. The Patriots Defense seemed to kick it up a notch, started to put lots of pressure on the quarterback,. and maybe it was because Brooks Bollinger (15-37 for 135 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT for a 39.6 rating) is a rookie playing very bad. Maybe Defensive Coordinator Eric Mangini wanted to take advantage of the weak ball handler. Maybe we'll see more of that. Tom Brady played another heroic-style game, common-place for him the week after tossing 4 INTs. Brady was 27-37 for 271 yards with a 93.4 rating. He hit receivers well, but the receivers missed too many, dropped too many, and the offense had to scurry off the field while in the red zone on four field goal situations. Adam Vinatieri was 3-4 in field goals, missing a 45 yarder in rotten weather and field conditions. But time of possession is the Patriots' ally. New England held the ball for 38:10 minutes over the Jets for 21:50 minutes, and had the offense played stronger, those number might - no, would have - been a bigger margin. The defensive pressure was a sight for sore eyes. Rosevelt Colvin and Jarvis Green registered sacks. Colvin, Seymour, and Willie McGinest were all over Bollinger, registering hurries, pressure passes, and incompletes all afternoon. "That was a satisfying win for the team," said head coach Bill Belichick. "Defensively, each time you hold a team to three points, you gotta feel good about that." Curtis Martin was held to 29 yards on 15 carries, and Laveranues Coles had the longest pass reception for 14 yards. "It was a good win," said Brady after the game, though he sounded frustrated. "After coming off last week, everyone was so bummed out and in the tank. We're at 7-5, we lead the division, and it would be nice to string together another win next week." As for other former Patriots now playing in Jersey, Ty Law was pretty ineffective, and sat out the later part of the game. He limped often, indicating that broken foot has yet to heal. New England travels to Buffalo next week for a chance to clinch the AFC East.
Weekend Break Down DOLPHINS (5-7) 24, Bills (4-8) 23 - FINAL: Buffalo had this one put away, and they blew it! Nick Saban has to be pretty happy with his team today. That's a heck of a comeback. PANTHERS (9-3) 24, Falcons (7-5) 6 - FINAL: Whamo! Carolina demands ownership over the NFC South. GIANTS (8-4) 17, Cowboys (7-5) 10 - FINAL: Stupid Dallas. They had every opportunity to take this one. Terry Glenn is a sissy. He allowed an interception by letting a defensive back control the play, missed several others by not being athletic enough. Note to Parcells: Put her to pasture. Bengals (9-3) 38, STEELERS (7-5) 31 - FINAL: Wow! After suffering losses to Indy, both of these teams go head to head for ownership over the AFC North, and Cinci wanted it worse. Ben Roethlisberger tossed for nearly 400 yards, and the Steelers still came up short. But he also tossed 3 INTs. BEARS (9-3) 19, Packers (2-10) 7 - FINAL: Brett Favre, I hope retirement is kinder to you than this season has been. RAVENS (4-8) 16, Texans (1-11) 15 - FINAL: Poor Houston. They keep a close game, but that was all. But what I want to know is how Domanick Davis can rush for 155 yards on 29 carries, and the Texans still lose? Is the city of Houston cursed? Buccaneers (8-4) 10, SAINTS (3-9) 3 - FINAL: Baseball score. New Orleans might be pathetic, but so is Tampa. Jaguars (9-3) 20, BROWNS (4-8) 14 - FINAL: Cleveland gave this one away in the third quarter with 17 unanswered points. Nice adjustments in the half, Jack Del Rio. Way to keep your keep in the game. The Cleveland Defense blew this one by falling asleep in the second half. Vikings (7-5) 21, LIONS (4-8) 16 - FINAL: What a surprise. The Lions lost. New head coach, same lousy team. COLTS (12-0) 35, Titans (3-9) 3 - FINAL: No comment. None needed. Cardinals (4-8) 17, 49ERS (2-10) 10 - FINAL: Two bad team in the West, and the worst of them gets the loss. Fitting. Redskins (6-6) 24, RAMS (5-7) 9 - FINAL: As inconsistent as Joe Gibbs' 'Skins have been, the Rams are worse, and suffering worse injuries. PATRIOTS (7-5) 16, Jets (2-10) 3 - FINAL: Pretty sloppy, but there's not losing the Jets on Ted Johnson Night. CHIEFS (8-4) 31, Broncos (9-3) 27 - FINAL: A third rate city trips, fumbles, and falls to a fourth rate city. CHARGERS (8-4) 34, Raiders (4-8) 10 - FINAL: Diego inches closer to the wild card spot for the playoffs, and the win give them a front running position. The Raiders continue the downward spiral. Seattle (9-2) at Philadelphia (5-6) Tonight 9 PM ABC Oddities of Week 14's Matchups Cleveland (4-8) at Cincinnati (9-3) 1 PM. Battle for O-HI-O. The Great Defensive Minds of Modern Day NFL gather together again. That being said, Romeo Crennel doesn't have the team to beat Marvin Lewis. Houston (1-11) at Tennessee (3-9) 1 PM. AFC Southern dullard of the bottom of the barrel, promising to be blacked out in the local areas. Indianapolis (12-0) at Jacksonville (9-3) 1 PM. Another AFC Southern matchup. Hopefully Jack Del Rio can make those adjustments again. New England (7-5) at Buffalo (4-8) 1 PM. AFC Eastern clincher. If New England wins, and Miami loses over in San Diego, the Patriots win the division. Tampa Bay (8-4) at Carolina (9-3) 1 PM. NFC Southern title fight for the top of the division. San Francisco (2-10) at Seattle (9-2) 4:05 PM. NFC Western round up. The Seahawks might be able to clinch the division with a win and a Rams loss. Detroit (4-8) at Green Bay (2-10) 8:30 PM. NFC Northerner. Two teams fighting about nothing. New Orleans (3-9) at Atlanta (7-5) 9:00 PM. NFC
Southerner. Good thing the game is in Atlanta. There's no telling where the
Saints could host, and that might screw up John Madden's Winnebago trek to
the game. Patriots News Corey Dillon, Kevin Faulk, and David Givens returned to action....RB Mike Cloud was cut then re-signed two days later, after Heath Evens became inactive with an injury...Adam Vinatieri is now the all-time point leader for the Patriots, having passed Gino Cappelletti with his field goal in the first half... League Notes Dallas cut inactive and ineffective WR Peerless Price...Oakland placed left guard Langston Walker on IR after undergoing emergency surgery for an internal hemorrhage...The Browns sat QB Trent Dilfer with sore knees and started rookie Charlie Frye. Notes and Quotes Gino Cappelletti held the Patriots scoring record for 34 years, 339 days, 534 1/2 games with 1,130 points. Adam Vinatieri currently has 1,134 points with the Patriots. Top Ten List of the Week 1. Can anyone stop the Colts from winning the rest of their games? 2. Nice win for the Bengals to bump Pittsburgh off the leader board for the North and gain two games. Marvin Lewis has things rolling. 3. If I was the Jets and expecting at least a second or third pick in the draft, I'd look at Matt Leinart from USC. Chad Pennington hasn't gotten you anywhere in the past four or five seasons, and now with his injuries, it is time to think about the future. 4. Expect a big overhaul in Houston this offseason, which may include David Carr. If he survives. 5. If the Patriots defense could pressure offensives like they did against New Jersey, we'd be unstoppable. 6. I wonder what games Steve Mariucci watched this week? 7. The Bills really blew a big one. They were up 23-3 going into the fourth. 60 minutes of football, guys. Not 45. 8. Nice shootout in KC with a win over Denver. Got to play better than that, Broncos. 9. Congratulations to Tom Brady on his SI Sportsman of the Year award (SI is long overdue on this one, as they were with many of their year-end awards, including Lance Armstrong. Better late than never.). 10. Congratulations once again to Adam Vinatieri on becoming the Patriots All-Time Points Leader. 5 December 2005 | ||
