The Monday Analysis - 4 January 2004

Belichick Named Coach of the Year

New England Patriots 14-2 head coach Bill Belichick has been named coach of the year by the Associated Press. Belichick, in his fourth year at the head position with the Patriots, won in a landslide vote, 35 1/2 votes. In second place was Cincinnati Bengals first year head coach Marvin Lewis with 7 votes, Dallas head coach Bill Parcells came in third with 6 1/2 votes and Eagles coach Andy Reid rounded off the voting with a single vote.

"If you had asked me at the beginning of the year," Ty Law said, "I'd say, `Hell, no! How can you cut Lawyer Milloy?'

"But he changed my mind. He's done an outstanding job. In my opinion, he's coach of the year. He can get rid of me, I don't care [Law's contract needs restructuring]. He's still the best coach of the year."

This is the second time a coach from New England has won Coach of the Year honors. Bill Parcells won in 1994.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

And the list is getting clearer

1. New England (14-2). Saturday night at the Playoffs will return to Foxboro!

2. Philadelphia (12-4). Hosting the Packers for a playoff game for the ages.

3. St Louis (12-4). The Rams will have to handle the red-hot Panthers at home.

4. Kansas City (13-3). No losing teams left to play. The Chiefs will have their hands full.

5. Indy (13-4). Peyton gets his Playoff win. Finally.

6. Tennessee (13-4). Steve McNair can not be throwing those INTs in Foxboro on Saturday. No way. Pats will make you pay.

7. Carolina (12-5). The Panthers have a good chance at keeping this season rolling in St. Louis this week.

8. Green Bay (11-6). Big overtime win this year almost looked like same old story as last year. Must be stronger against Philly this weekend.

9. Denver (10-7). The scrubs were playing again this week.

10. Baltimore (10-7). Tough game and a tougher loss at home. Stay home guys.

11. Seattle (10-7). Mike Holmgren's homecoming was worse than going back home to Seattle.

12. Dallas (10-7). Again, the Parcells Padres run out of gas.

Brady is Player of the Week, Vrabel Defensive Player of December

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was named FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week. Brady threw four touchdown passes in the 31-0 win over the Bills in Week 17. Also named was Ahman Green from Green Bay as the Ground Player of the Week.

Defensive lineman Mike Vrabel was named Defensive Player for December after recording 27 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception. The Patriots defense recorded two shut outs in December and allowed only 29 points in four games.

Wild Card Weekend Break Down

PACKERS 33 (11-6), SEAHAWKS 27 (10-7) - FINAL/OT: Rough and tough take 'em and give 'em game at Lambeau ends with a Matt Hasselbeck interception to Al Harris in overtime that was run back for a touchdown. Seattle gets the long plane ride home to Washington while the Pack will travel to Philly next week. Brett Favre sets an NFL record of 14 consecutive playoff games with a touchdown pass, passing Dan Marino.

COLTS 41 (13-4), Broncos 10 (10-7) - FINAL: Peyton got his playoff win, and in a huge way. He was 22 for 26, 337 yards and 5 TDs. Perfect quarterback rating. The Broncos got creamed.

Titans 20 (13-4), RAVENS 17 (10-7) - FINAL: Gary Anderson, who is about 105 years old, kicks the game winning 46-yard field goal. Titans move on, Ravens stay home.

PANTHERS 29 (12-5), Cowboys 10 (10-7) - FINAL: The Tuna got slammed! Carolina committed no penalties nor did they turn the ball over. It is hard to lose a game with those statistics.

Spurrier Quits

Washington Redskins coach Steve "I just could not get it done in the NFL" Spurrier resigned Tuesday after the end of a 5-11 season. And it went down in typical Spurrier-idiotic fashion.

Spurrier denied he'd resigned for two hours after the Redskins had announced his departure, but then acknowledged the he had in fact resigned.

"We had a little miscommunication there," Spurrier told The Associated Press.

"I've enjoyed my time in Washington," Spurrier wrote in his statement. "Obviously, all of the losing can wear you down, but I believe that the franchise is headed in the right direction."

Spurrier finished 12-20 in two seasons.

Callahan Fired from Oakland

Just one year after rookie coaching his way to the Super Bowl, Bill Callahan has been fired from the Raiders after a 4-12 season. Callahan stated during the season that "we have to be the dumbest football team in the league," which did not help maintain respect from the players. Many voiced their opinions in the press over the season, including Charles Woodson, who was suspended late in the season for violating a team curfew.

Callahan is rumored to head to Tampa Bay to rejoin Jon Gruden's staff with the Buccaneers.

2004 Patriots Schedule

Playoff Schedule - Divisional Playoff Weekend

Tennessee (13-4) at New England (14-2), 8:15 PM CBS. Saturday Night at the Playoffs return to Foxboro!

SUNDAY, January 11

Indy (13-4) at Kansas City (13-3), 1 PM CBS. The Chiefs are playing teams with winning records now. Different ball game.

Green Bay (11-6) at Philadelphia (12-4), 4:45 PM FOX. The Pack survives a thrilling overtime victory against Seattle, and they'll need the momentum in the city of Brotherly Love - where they'll get no such thing.

Notes & Quotes

I simply believe that this is the right time for me to move on, because this team needs new leadership.

- From the Steve Spurrier Resignation Statement

They outplayed us. I'm disappointed. I'm realistic, though. I've got to improve the team.

- Dallas head coach Bill Parcells after the Cowboys lost 29-10.

Carolina committed zero penalties and allowed zero turnovers in their Wild Card game against the Cowboys.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. Congratulations to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on being named Coach of the Year.

2. The Patriots and their BYE.

3. Man, it was great to see the Tuna burn out and get handled.

4. No matter what, there's nothing like a winter game in Lambeau, ya know?

5. Romeo Crennell and Charlie Weis are getting a lot of attention for a head coaching position, and will most likely get one. Well deserved honors, even though I won't miss Weis.

6. Peyton finally gets his playoff win, and in big fashion.

7. Nice to see there's no mercy in Oakland when the coach is obviously not working out. Callahan is out.

8. Steve Spurrier's Fun N Gun turned out to be lowly and slowly. Spurrier resigns.

9. Jake Plummer looked a little pale turning the second half of that game Sunday night. Yikes, Jake. Whatdya expect it was going to be like?

10. The Chiefs will need to be on their game next week for the visiting Colts, who look red hot after this win over Denver.
