A Word from The Writer:

The Monday Analysis - 3 October 2005

First game for October, and the Red Sox keep their mojo going long enough for a third straight Wild Card slot. And the Patriots end another long win streak...

San Diego Out Chargers Patriots at Home

As a win streak ended last year with straight 21 wins, the 21 home game win streak ends this week against San Diego 41-17.

The missing links in the Patriots are starting to show. The offense isn't making plays, the defense misses tackles, Special Teams isn't getting the field position they should be getting. No one wants to hear about who is missing and why things don't go well, but the secondary is young and not as aggressive as they should be. The defense isn't tackling like they need to be tackling. And the offense isn't moving the ball down the field, especially on third down like they need to be doing. And I'm not sure what the offense's excuse is. Outside of Matt Light, they're pretty healthy.

Yet the players avoid the excuses.

"Rodney's (Harrison, start strong safety who is out for the season with a knee injury) always been a big defender for us, helping us out there but we don't have Rodney now," safety Eugene Wilson said after the game. "I don't know what Rodney could have done out there today to change it."

And the head coach wasn't making excuses either, but summed it up pretty clear.

''San Diego is the better team,'' Bill Belichick said. "They did a good job in every area better than we did and I think the score reflected that.''

Ouch. When asked if the injuries had much to do with the loss, Belichick was his Cleveland Days-style aloof-self, and muttered an "I don't know" all the while looking to want to slap the reporter who asked it. Dumb question, but it had to be asked.

The Quarterback break down: Tom Brady: 19-32 for 224 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. Drew Brees: 19-24 for 248 yards, 2 TDs. And the running game? Oh do you really want those numbers? Ok, Corey Dillon: 63 yards, 1 TD. LaDainian Tomlinson: 134 yards, 2 TDs. The Patriots had zero sacks, zero turnovers on defense, even the Chargers threw to more receivers. And Adam Vinatieri - he missed a 27 yard field goal.

Where do the Patriots go from here?

"You go back to work," Quarterback Tom Brady said. "There are 12 games left and no game is more important than the one we have coming up this week. We are going to go out to practice this week, get back to work tomorrow, like I said, go out and correct our mistakes. It is not going to get any easier."

No it doesn't. Atlanta doesn't about their injuries.  And most of Patriots Nation doesn't care either.

Just win. That's what you guys do best. Win.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

1. Indy (4-0). The Defense is playing, the Offense has showed their heads. Nothing is going wrong yet.
2. Cincinnati (4-0). Marvin Lewis was the answer the Bengals needed to be a Team again.
3. Tampa Bay (4-0). Jon Gruden is a happy guy again.
4. Washington (3-0). The Joe Gibbs of Old brings respect back to the Redskins of New.
5. Atlanta (3-1). The big challenge is next week against the Patriots. Or is it?
6. Philadelphia (3-1). The wins are suspect, but the train is rolling right a long, even with McNabb being injured.
7. Pittsburgh (2-1). A Bye and they stay.
8. New England (2-2). My new prediction is that the Patriots will be off this list soon. I just don't think they wan to play these days.
9. Denver (3-1). This is the quietest 3-1 team out there.
10. NJ Giants (3-1). Maybe it was dropping Kurt Warner that got the Giants winning.
11. San Diego (2-2). The Martyball Machine is back, and the offense is showing signs of terror.
12. New Orleans (2-2).  No home. No problem.

Weekend Break Down

BUCCANEERS (4-0) 17, Lions (1-2) 13 – FINAL: Two former assistants to Mike Holmgren, and Jon Gruden gets this one over Steve Mariucci.

Colts (4-0) 31, TITANS (1-3) 10 – FINAL: The Real Peyton Manning finally showed up. No one ever really believed the other guy impersonating Manning was really Manning.

Chargers (2-2) 41 PATRIOTS (2-2) 17 – FINAL: No analysis needed. The Patriots were simply outplayed all over the place. San Diego came across country looking for a win, and they got it.

REDSKINS (3-0) 20, Seahawks (2-2) 17 – FINAL/OT: Joe Gibbs has finally got his team moving the way he wanted. Maybe it was in the quarterback change. Or maybe if was getting Santana Moss back.

SAINTS (2-2) 19, Bills (1-3) 7 – FINAL: The Saints have a real home win. San Antonio welcomes New Orleans, and dooms on the Bills.

Broncos (3-1) 20, JAGUARS (2-2) 7 – FINAL:

GIANTS (3-1) 44, Rams (2-2) 24 – FINAL: Eli Manning shows his own stuff, 4 TDs. And Plaxico Burress shows his worth catching two of them. Marc Bulger was lopsided with 2 TDs and 3 INTs, and there was zero rushing game. Stephen Jackson and Marshall Faulk combined for 33 yards total.

BENGALS (4-0) 16, Texans (0-3) 10 – FINAL: The Marvin Lewis Experiment is going just fine. And the poor Texans are in dire need of a coaching overhaul.

RAVENS (1-2) 13, Jets (1-3) 3 – FINAL: Jets fans, get used to disappointment on offense this season. Ravens fans, continue to be disappointed with your offense this season.

Eagles (3-1) 37 CHIEFS (2-2) 31 - FINAL: Kansas City is terrible. They were way ahead in the beginning of this one, and the Eagles, like great teams do, managed to win in the end, while the Chiefs, like most not-as-good-as-you-think teams do, blew it. Donovan McNabb tossed 3 TDs with an injury and d-back Sheldon Brown marched one of his 2 INTs in for a fourth.

RAIDERS (1-3) 19, Cowboys (2-2) 13 – FINAL: The Real Drew Bledsoe returned, and he wanted his lousy QB rating (68.1%) back, with 11-26 for 212 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. Kerry Collins wasn't much better, 13-23 for 218 yards, 0 TDs. Dallas comes up short and gives Oakland their first win.

FALCONS (3-1) 30, Vikings (1-3) 10 – FINAL: The Vikings are terrible. I mean, I know they are playing a dynamic team in Atlanta, but Minnesota is still bad.

CARDINALS (0-3) 31, 49ers (1-2) 14 - FINAL: The very first NFL regular season game player outside the United States, and Mexico City gets the honor. But Good God what a terrible game between two terrible teams. QB Josh McCown gets sacked and fumbles on the very first place and the 49ers score. 9 seconds expired in the game. Personal Fouls left and right, Refs giving announces in Spanish. Let's not go back to Mexico City, Ok, Commish? But the Cardinal get back to it, and destroy the hometown away team favorites.

Notes & Quotes

"I am not really sure what happened out there today. Whatever, it wasn't good. We went sour in the second half."

- Logan Mankins, Rookie Patriots Offensive Line

Top Ten List of the Week

1. Happy Birthday to my Mom on Tuesday!

2. I didn't want to believe that the holes in the Patriots from injuries and departures would keep the Patriots down, but I am starting to believe that the obvious missing links are starting to show their signs of absence. *sigh*

3. Congrats to the Red Sox for not only blowing a big first place lead, and letting the Skankees take the AL East title for the eighth straight season, but for getting into the playoffs for the third straight season, a franchise record. Time to defend that trophy, Idiots. And Defend it you must.

4. If there was a shoot out between Manning No. 2 and Manning No. 3, who would win?

5. Brett Favre and the Packers are 0-3. Must need win tonight on Monday Night Football if they want to salvage anything out of this season -- and for Favre to keep his job.

6. The Jets are in for a very long season.

7. I am amazed Jon Gruden turned the Bucs around as quickly as he has, especially with the unlikely Brian Griese under Center.

8. ESPN's Suzy Kolber. They should put her on television 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, never take her off TV. Someone should just create the Suzy Kolber Network.

9. If Joe Gibbs keeps the Redskins winning like this, there might just be a new sheriff in town of the NFC East. But I doubt it.

10. Any takers before Vinny Testeverde takes over the starting position for the Jets?
