The Monday Analysis - 2 January 2006

Happy New Year. Now on to the Playoffs.

Patriots Seconds, Thirds, Waterboys Stink Up A Loss to Miami

The Patriots non-starters kept pace with the Miami starters with a 28-26 loss, but let's hope these guys don't play much during the playoffs.

Before Tom Brady left the game to sit on the sidelines, he tossed an interception and a touchdown pass. He didn't even bother with the pre-game warm ups he usually does two to three hours before the game, giving an indication that he was going to keep his starting streak going, but that was all.

Corey Dillon was out, as was Tedy Bruschi and a slew of other starters. Some, like Deion Branch and Richard Seymour played, but saw limited time.

Doug Flutie saw one play, a drop kick for an extra point. Not familiar with that? That's expected, since it has not been done since the NFL championship game in December 1941. Flutie lined up like he was going for a two-point conversion, dropped deep in the shotgun, the ball came to him, he let it bounce on the turf, then kicked it through the uprights. You never saw such a celebration. Evidently, he'd practiced this a lot in Canada and even at Boston College.

Matt Cassell saw the majority of action at quarterback, going 11-20 for 168 yards, 2 TDs, and a 116.3 rating.

For Miami, Ricky Williams played well, rushing 28 times for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Head coach Bill Belichick, despite all his musings during the week, was more interested in keeping starters healthy and playing everyone on the bench than winning on Sunday.

The regular season obviously is over. On to the playoffs.

Black Monday: Coaches Apply Within

It's here. Black Monday when coaches are fired. Here's the latest:

Steve Mariucci was fired from the Lions back in Week 12. Lions President Matt Millen really should be let go soon, as well. Dick Jauron filled in, but he will most likely be looking for assistant coaching positions elsewhere in 2006.

Dick Vermeil notified just about everyone before the game against the Bengals that he would retire at the end of the season. The end of the season is here for the Chiefs. Enjoy retirement, Coach.

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf notified Mike Tice following the win over Chicago that he was out as the Vikings head coach.

The Texans fired head coach Dom Capers after a 2-14 season that included beating up David Carr for the past four seasons.

The Rams fired Mike Martz, who has been on leave with a heart ailment since Week 6. Interim coach Joe Vitt is not expected to keep the head coaching job permanently.

Bills Owner Ralph Wilson told the Associated Press on Sunday that "there are going to be some changes," speculating GM Tom Donahue's job is in jeopardy. Wilson plans to meet with Donahue and head coach Mike Mularkey in the next coming days.

The Packers fired head coach Mike Sherman after Green Bay finished 4-12, their worst season since 1991.

Cardinals head coach Dennis Green fired two assistants: the offensive line coach and the special teams coach, plus the defensive line coach retired.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

The Playoff are here and the picture is clear.
1. Indy (14-2). No matter what, they will play the rest of the season indoors. Talk about modern era football.
2. Seattle (13-3). Congrats Seattleites. This is your moment in the sun, which is kind of funny since Seattle gets about nine months of rain.
3. Chicago (11-5). If the Defense can carry the team, and Rex Grossman can stay healthy and productive, the Bears have a chance to run through the playoffs.
4. Denver (13-3). They can stop your run and run all over you. It's stopping your passing game that Denver has problems with.
5. New England (10-6). If the New England team from the past six weeks shows up in the playoffs, no team wants to play the Patriots.
6. Cincinnati (11-5). High powered Offense, but the Defense is suspect, and needs to stop the run in the post season. They allowed 115 yards rushing per games.
7. Carolina (11-5). Back in the post season since their run to Super Bowl XXXVIII.
8. Tampa Bay (11-5). First playoff appearance since winning Super Bowl XXXVII, and man doesn't it feel good, Jon Gruden.
9. Pittsburgh (11-5).  Squeezed in on the last day. If nothing else, the Steelers will beat you up by the middle of the fourth quarter.
10. NJ Giants (11-5). First playoff appearance in a dog's age. Now Tom Coughlin has to figure out how to make Manning No. 3 product (hint hint: give the ball to Tiki).
11. Jacksonville (12-4). Too bad Indy is in front of you. Talk about a magical season no pone talked about.
12.  Washington (10-6). Joe Gibbs is back in the post season, and firing the final nail in the 2005 Dallas Coffin.

Weekend Break Down

COLTS (14-2) 17, Cardinals (5-11) 13 - FINAL: Tony Dungy returns and the Colts are back on the right foot, even with scrubs.

Panthers (11-5) 44, FALCONS (8-8) 11 - FINAL: The Falcons just rolled over and laid an egg after being eliminated a couple weeks ago. Yuck!

CHIEFS (10-6) 37, Bengals (11-5) 3 - FINAL: So, does anyone else really think the Bengals wanted to drop to the 4th seed?

JETS (4-12) 30, Bills (5-11) 26 - FINAL: Slugfest for the AFC East Cellar.

STEELERS (11-5) 35, Lions (5-11) 21 - FINAL: Pittsburgh wins to get in. Lions are looking are a new future next year.

BROWNS (6-10) 20, Ravens (6-10) 16 - FINAL: Old Browns lose to the New Browns.

BUCCANEERS (11-5) 27, Saints (3-13) 13 - FINAL: And with the win, Gruden gets back tot he Playoffs.

PACKERS (4-12) 23, Seahawks (13-3) 17 - FINAL: An emotional farewell for Brett Favre following a tough season, and the return of Mike Holmgren to Lambeau. This one could be Favre's swan song.

Dolphins (9-7) 28, PATRIOTS (10-6) 26 - FINAL: Scrubs lose to Starters. Miami will be back to dominance next season. You can smell it.

49ERS (4-12) 20, Texans (2-14) 17 -FINAL/OT: And with the loss, Houston gets Reggie Bush in the Draft.

JAGUARS (12-4) 40, Titans (4-12) 13 - FINAL: The Jags have to the be the best Wild Card team in history with this record.

VIKINGS (9-7) 34, Bears (11-5) 10 - FINAL: Beat the Bears, lose your job. Best of luck, Mike Tice.

Redskins (10-6) 31, EAGLES (6-10) 20 - FINAL: And the Eagles soar into the offseason this early for the first time all century.

Rams (6-10) 20, COWBOYS (9-7) 10 - FINAL: And down goes the Good Ship Parcells after failing to make the playoffs before the game, and with it the final Sunday Night game on ESPN.

Broncos (13-3) 23, CHARGERS (9-7) 7 - FINAL: San Diego didn't even bother to put up a fight. Sad.

Giants (11-5) 30, RAIDERS (4-12) 21 - FINAL: The Giants get a win, and the NFC East title.

Preliminary Draft Order

  1. Houston (2-14)

  2. New Orleans (3-13)

  3. New Jersey Jets (4-12)

  6. San Francisco (4-12)

  7. Green Bay (4-12)

  12. Cleveland (6-10)

  14. Philadelphia (6-10)

  15. Atlanta (8-8)

  16. San Diego (9-7)

(exact order to be determined)

The Playoff Line Up

NFC Teams
1. Seattle (13-3): Certainly the strongest team going into the playoffs from the NFC, best chances to get to Detroit.
2. Chicago (11-5): If the Offense can take care of the ball, and the Defense can take care of the game, the Playoffs are theirs to lose.
3. Tampa Bay (11-5)
: Decent team with too high of a seed with the young team. This is Gruden's first step to get back to the Super Bowl.
4. NJ Giants (11-5): Heavy with veterans and heavy with young players. Thr key for Tom Coughlin is to mix them correctly.
5. Carolina (11-5):
The rough and tough Panthers are back in the post season, but too inconsistent to go far.
6.  Washington (10-6)
: Just lucky to be here.
AFC Teams

1. Indy (14-2): The odds on favorites to win it all.
2. Denver (13-3): Played well all season, but not expected to keep it trucking through the post season.
3. Cincinnati (11-5): Powerful Offense, but Marvin Lewis has not been able to build the Defense he had in Baltimore.
4. New England (10-6): The returning champs know how to win everywhere, but they may have lost too many starters to get beyond games played at Gillette.
5. Jacksonville (12-4): Tough team, but will have a tough time playing in bad weather.
6. Pittsburgh (11-5): The team that will beat everyone up, and probably still come up short.

The Odds

New England Patriots 7-1
Indianapolis Colts 10-1
Pittsburgh Steelers 22-1
Denver Broncos 8-1
Carolina Panthers 38-1
Seattle Seahawks 7-1
Jacksonville Jaguars 100-1
Washington Redskins 45-1
Cincinnati Bengals 35-1

Signs of the Apocalypse

1. Michael Felger of the Boston Herald came on the Fifth Quarter  after the Patriots game and just started in on berating Doug Flutie and his drop kick extra point. Felger is not from New England and should get the hell out. Wisconsin is calling for you, Mike. Go back to the frozen tundra, hack.

2. The league removed Week 17 Monday Night games a few years back, and they should remove all Week 17 night games, including Sunday nights (Saturday night is ok with a full schedule on Sunday afternoon). Dallas was knocked out of the playoffs late in the afternoon and the game was meaningless. Let's get the regular season done by 7PM EST, and move on to the playoffs.

Notes and Quotes

With Hank Poteat starting for Asante Samuel on Sunday, that made 45 different starters for the New England Patriots this season. The Patriots had 48 different starters in 2003, and 40 different starters in 2000.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. So long, good night, Sunday Night Football and NFL Primetime on ESPN.

2. The Patriots need to play the type of football they've been playing since November in order to get to Detroit, and they will need to do it winning two games on the road.

3. If I were Tony Dungy, and I am not, I would practice the heck out of my players during the bye week, playing them against convicts or something like that, since chances are they will face Pittsburgh in two weeks.

4. Jacksonville has other problems coming into the post season: a quarterback controversy. With Byron Leftwich sitting out on Sunday, we may see David Garrard at the Razor next Saturday.

5. Football in high definition is unreal. It's like watching a game live with a magnifying glass. Simply awesome.

6. As long as Jake Delhomme doesn't lose his pants in the playoffs like he did on Sunday (a sack caused his pants to tear at the seams in the rear), the Panthers have a chance to clean up on the road, but that is a long shot.

7. My predictions this year were lousy, 3-3 teams in the AFC made the playoffs and 2-4 in the NFC. One team even finished at the bottom of the barrel.

8. Right now, the Patriots could possibly have a rematch playoff run. They've played Jacksonville twice, once in 1997 in the AFC Championship game, and another in a Wild Card in 1999. They played Chicago in Super Bowl XX twenty years ago, and the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII. They also beat the Colts and the Steelers in the playoffs in the past four years to get to their Super Bowl appearances. Denver has been a familiar foe in the post season as well.

9. The Giants have an uphill battle, starting this weekend. I just don't see the Panthers losing the Wild Card.

10. Bring on the Post Season!
