| A Word from The Writer: The Monday Analysis - 26 September 2005 Wins counts. And wins feel great, especially in a hostile environment on the road. Patriots Sloppy Rebound, Win in PittsburghAt half-time the score was still a very close 10-7 in favor of Pittsburgh, but the way the Patriots were playing, they were lucky the game was that close. Once again, penalties and turnovers dragged the Patriots to the bottom of the sea. But they held in long enough and fought hard enough, and once again Tom Brady and Adam Vinatieri marched down the field for a game winning drive. Brady now has 18 late fourth quarter game winning drives including playoff games. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick appeared emotionally drained, but ecstatic approaching the podium for his post game press conference. ''That was a heck of a football game," h said. ''It was a terrific game, coming down to the last play. It just doesn't get any closer than that.” Tom Brady was 31 for 41 for 372 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT. He was a mind-blowing 12 for 12 for 168 yards in the fourth quarter alone. Translation: Don't give Tom Brady time to do something with the ball. And that is just what Bill Cowher did. The Steelers were able to score inside the two minute warning on first and goal, but did nothing to wear down the clock on that drive. With two timeouts, Cowher took one with 50 seconds left, but never took his third. He left is on the board, and Adam Vinatieri booms his 43-yarder through the uprights leaving the Steelers with one second. A grounder kick off to the Steelers wears off that last second, and the ball game is done. And so were the Steelers. In the first half, Rodney "Mister" Harrison would leave the game on a cart with what looks like a serious left knee injury, the type that may keep him out for the rest of the season. Later, Left Tackle Matt Light would leave the same way with a right leg injury.
Weekend Break Down DOLPHINS (2-1) 27, Panthers (1-2) 24 - FINAL: Nick Saban must have watched film of last week's Panthers over Patriots game, saw what his old friend Bill Belichick did wrong, and told his team to do the opposite. Or did Saban just call Belichick? COLTS (3-0) 13, Browns (1-2) 6 - FINAL: What happened to the offensive machine that was Peyton Manning? Three weeks: 2 TDs 2 INTs. EAGLES (2-1) 23, Raiders (0-3) 20 - FINAL: Another tight win for the Eagles, and bottom of the barrel for Oakland. Bengals (3-0) 24, BEARS (1-2) 7 - FINAL: Lovie Smith has to be ready to jump off a bridge by now. On the other side, Marvin Lewis has the mojo rolling. RAMS (2-1) 31, Titans (1-2) 27 - FINAL: The Titans have to be bad, not to be able to take advantage of Marc Bulger's two fumbles and an INT. Falcons (2-1) 24, BILLS (1-2) 16 - FINAL: Mike Vick is back to rolling all over the place, making plays, scoring touchdowns. Jaguars (2-1) 26, JETS (1-2) 20 - FINAL/OT: Ouch! Chad Pennington is out with a - surprise - shoulder injury. Big loss in OT for the J-E-T-S. Hey Ty Law, how are you liking New York now? VIKINGS (1-2) 33, Saints (1-2) 16 - FINAL: Minnesota finally gets a win over the homeless Saints no less. And Culpepper is back in the grove. Buccaneers (3-0) 17, PACKERS (0-3) 16 - FINAL: Brett Favre never started a season 0-3. He has now. SEAHAWKS (2-1) 37, Cardinals (0-3) 12 - FINAL: When Arizona gets a quarterback, let me know. Cowboys (2-1) 34, 49ERS (1-2) 31 - FINAL: The Machine continues. Bledsoe finally threw an interception, two in fact. But he also threw 2 TDs and rushed for a third. Patriots (2-1) 23, STEELERS (2-1) 20 - FINAL: Massive comeback, bounce back, win. The Patriots are always going to be tough to beat, especially when you screw up and give Brady and Vinatieri time to do their thing. CHARGERS (1-2) 45, Giants (2-1) 23 - FINAL: Eli's First Game in Diego. I didn't think San Diego has rabid sports fans with long memories. I was wrong. They are rabid, and they don't forget. "They hate us here, and I love it!"
Top Ten List of the Week 1. A win! Feeling good! 2. I was happy to see San Diego fans give Eli Manning such a bad time last night (remember, the Chargers drafted Manning first in 2004, but later traded the pick to New Jersey/A after Manning's whining about not wanting to play for Marty Schottenheimer and the Chargers). They never let up, and apparently neither did the Chargers. 3. Speaking of the Mannings, what's going on with Peyton? He's playing like Eli. 4. Man, I really hope Rodney Harrison is back this season, and is going to be ok. I know he's most likely out for the season, but I am still hoping. 5. And Matt Light, too. That left side is going to have to get on the ball while Light is out. 6. The word is that both Chad Pennington and backup QB Jay Fielder are awaiting MRI results. Vinny Testeverde's agent already contacted the Jets. Can you imagine that? 7. The Bengals are on fire. I don't know what Marvin Lewis is doing over there in O-HI-O, but it's working. 8. When most kickers come out on to the field setting up to kick a game winner, I think a lot of fans remain on the edge of their seats. With Adam Vinatieri, its more like a sigh of relief followed by cracking open a drink. 9. Miami is weak as a team, but good coaching helps push a team into the win column, and that's what is going on with the 'Fins. 10. The Machine in Dallas is still rolling. Incredible. 26 September 2005 |
