A Word from The Writer: The Monday Analysis - 24 October 2005 The Patriots rest up during the Bye, but others move on through the storms. Slugging Patriots Get Much Needed Bye The Patriots had a much needed Bye week in Week 7, giving the players some time to rest and recover, something they desperately need. New England is getting hammered with injuries like the Florida is getting hammered with bad weather. They've lost Rodney Harrison for the year with a major knee injury. His replacement, Gus Scott, is also now on IR with a knee injury. Corey Dillon sat on the sidelines in the Denver game and did not play. Willie McGinest broke his hand, and is playing with a cast. Richard Seymour sat out two games. Tyrone Poole has been out for five weeks with an injury. Matt Light is out for 6-8 weeks with a leg injury. Randall Gay sat out time with an injury. And the list goes on. Another Part of the problem this season is the poor playing, particularly in the secondary. The Patriots are giving up the big plays, so much so that teams have been and will continue to take advantage of the weak defensive backs. In the past, New England has always had a strong secondary, and head coach Bill Belichick takes pride and special attention to it. But no one is making the big play, no one is breaking up long passes, no one is making the hard hitting tackles to scare anyone off, no one is getting the turnover. A third problem with the first six games is that they played four divisional champs, and the other two teams appeared in the Super Bowl in the past three years - one losing to the Patriots. The schedule did not give the Patriots more than one consecutive game at home, until after the Bye when they have two straight, both night games. Oakland was only 5-11 in 2004, but played well and that record isn't accurate. Oakland continues that trend this season. Carolina started slow in 2004 with injuries, but caught momentum towards the last half of the season, just missing the playoffs. The momentum carried over the off season. Atlanta went to the NFC championship game, Pittsburgh lost to New England in last year's AFC championship game, Denver is playing better this season than they have since the days of Elway, and San Diego has scored more points than any other team this season. Notice that the Patriots have yet to play in their own division, which is at an all-time bad. Both Buffalo and New Jersey have quarterback problems. Jersey lost their starter and his back up for the season, and had to drag Vinny Testeverde out of mothballs to start. In Buffalo, the next coming of who-knows-what JP Losman lost his job to Kelly Holcomb. Miami has Gus Frerotte and an aging defense all trying to adapt to new coach Nick Saban. The Bye comes at a good time. Get players healed - Richard Seymour is ready and able to return, and we get Tedy Bruschi back - the secondary has time to work on problems, the offensive line can tighten up, and we get two home games in a row - Buffalo and Indy, who despite their 7-0 record, never has much success in Foxboro. There was no time off during this Bye as there has been in the past, and no one seems to complain. The Patriots need a lot of improvement - everywhere. Let's hope the Bye gives them a chance to get back on track. Full Tilt, Full Return: The Re-Entrance of Tedy Bruschi Tedy Bruschi announced on Monday he was returning to the Patriots - now. Bruschi returned to the practice field on Wednesday, bigger than before and ready for football. Bruschi appears to be in great shape, but he'll need to get into football shape. Week 8 against the hobbling Bills at The Razor on prime time is a great chance for him to get into football shape, and prepare for the bigger game the following week: same location, Monday night, Indianapolis. "I love Tedy Bruschi, but I don't have a crystal ball," head coach Bill Belichick said in a press conference answering questions about when Bruschi will actually play. Those words were heart-felt. But Belichick is also a realist, and knows he can't put a guy out on the field who isn't ready. But who could be more ready than Tedy Bruschi? Every doctor has cleared him medically. The team supports him. The fans support him. He has passed every single conditioning test the team has. Football-wise, Bruschi has been around the meetings, and knows the game planning. Outside of starting him with limited playing during the first game at least, Bruschi should be a Full Tilt in a few short weeks of competitive football. Bruschi provides some much needed leadership and inspiration to the defense. No, he can't play defensive back, which is playing so poorly, but the added pressure up front, helping the pass rush and stopping the run may give the secondary some extra support and padding for offenses going downfield. The true test for all of this is the Indianapolis game. Just having No. 54 on the field is a benefit, and doing it two home games in a row is the best bonus. Let's Schedule: Why the League Blew the Kansas City-Miami Game Here's the deal. A wild Category 5 hurricane named Wilma is heading for Miami, due to hit on Sunday. It just so happens the Dolphins play at home on Sunday. So what does the league do? They play it smart, and move the game up 43 hours and run it at 7 PM on Friday. Good move, right? Right. So you're first question is, "What channel is it on?" Well, that's another story. The game was aired locally in Miami and Kansas City - but that was it. Sirius aired it on their stations, but seriously, how many people have Sirius? Two? Five? Right. So, logically (I guess) it would be hard for CBS to air the game nationally, which everyone in the country would love to see. But if everyone wants it, it is naturally logical and just not give it out, right? Yeah, right. And ESPN might not be able to move their schedule, since they are trying to be a real network, and give them credit. I think the World Series of Poker was on Friday night. And, I mean, they have to air it on all four of their stations. Well, ok, ESPN Classic had and old Bobby Fischer match against the IBM computer. So, what to do? How about - gasp - airing the game on NFL Network! What a concept! The league actually owns a channel on cable and satellite. And they usually re-air games edited during the week. In fact, they replayed this very game Sunday night! So, obviously CBS should not have a problem. I mean, I'm sure they'd make a couple of bucks and all that. And as for rescheduling, come on! Have you watched NFL Network? They repeat shows every three hours! So, note to the Commish: if this comes up again, where there is a rescheduling, use your cable network. That's what it's there for. Now, back to Week 7 action.
Weekend Break Down Lions (3-3) 13, BROWNS (2-4) 10 - FINAL: Detroit's solution to the growing problem? Change quarterbacks. Remove Joey Harrington, insert Jeff Garcia, win a game. albeit a close over over the Crennels. Colts (7-0) 38, TEXANS (0-6) 20 - FINAL: Poor Houston. Maybe a hurricane should wash away their city. Actually six have this season: Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Seattle, and Indianapolis. RAMS (3-4) 28, Saints (2-5) 17 - FINAL: Poor New Orleans. They had a chance this season, and the weather is killing them. EAGLES (4-2) 20 Chargers (3-4) 17 - FINAL: A bad Special Team unit for the Eagles comes up with a big score - with a blocked field goal attempt and a 65-yard return to help this win. What has happened to San Diego, who going into this game scored more points than any other team in the league? Suddenly, Philly is happening again. VIKINGS (2-4) 23, Packers (1-5) 20 - FINAL: Hear that, the dive bomb sound? Last week that sound probably swirled around Minnesota. This week its in Mike Sherman's office. Steelers (4-2) 27, BENGALS (5-2) 13 - FINAL: Bengals are moving forward, but they can't stop Willie Parker rushing for 131 yards. Nor could the Defense get off the field, giving Pittsburgh a better than 11 minute advantage. Ack! REDSKINS (4-2) 52, 49ers (1-5) 17 - FINAL: Blow out. SEAHAWKS (5-2) 13, Cowboys (4-3) 10 - FINAL: Josh Brown, Seattle's kicker, is player of the week. A 55 yarder to put points on the board, and a 50-yarder to win it, all in the rain at home. Bravo! CARDINALS (2-4) 20, Titans (2-5) 10 - FINAL: Now the Cardinals can say they can win in Mexico and against Tennessee. RAIDERS (2-4) 38, Bills (3-4) 17 - FINAL: Bad day for the Bills. And they get to go against New England next week. BEARS (3-3) 10, Ravens (2-4) 6 - FINAL: Baseball score. GIANTS (4-2) 24, Broncos (5-2) 23 - FINAL: Wild win for the Giants over a team from a Third Rate City. Actually, people have told me if more like a Fifth Rate City, but we'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Too bad so sad Broncos Fans, but Mike Shanahan shows with every season how much of a second tier coach he is, and so is Jake Plummer is a glorified third-stringer. Manning No. 3 shows some poise, and fires in a score with seconds left in the game. Chiefs (4-2) 30, DOLPHINS (2-4) 20 - FINAL: Poor Dolphins. The game is moved up due to weather that is going to cream south Florida, and they still can't catch a break and get the win. Give Kansas City a lot f credit to come across the country like this, play a game 43 earlier than scheduled and walk away with a win. Atlanta has a bye in Week 10, but Miami plays the Saints in Baton Rogue and now gets ten days rest to prepare. New Jersey Jets (2-4) at Atlanta (4-2) Tonight 9 PM ABC. Open date: Carolina, Jacksonville, New England, Tampa Bay Oddities of Week 8's Matchups Arizona (2-4) at Dallas (4-3) 1 PM. Battle of the southwest. Bring your out tacos. Chicago (3-3) at Detroit (3-3) 1 PM. NFC Northern. The sick thing is that the winner gets control of the division. Insane. Washington (4-2) at N.Y. Giants (4-2) 1 PM. Classic NFC Easterner. And the winner could get control of the division. Kansas City at San Diego 4:05 PM. AFC Western Showdown. Current Schottenheimers versus Old Schottenheimers. Miami at New Orleans 4:05 PM. Saints home game in Baton Rouge, LA. And home hasn't been friendly to them, but there again, home hasn't been friendly to the Dolphins either. Buffalo (3-4) at New England (3-3) 8:30 PM. AFC East matchup in primetime? Nope, the big story might be the return of 54. Baltimore (2-4) at Pittsburgh (4-2) 9 PM. AFC Northerner, and the Ravens really are probably dreading this nationally televised embarrassment. Open date: Atlanta, Indianapolis, N.Y. Jets, Seattle Patriots News DB Hank Poteat was resigned to the active roster...The Patriots also resigned WR Andre' Davis...Defensive Back Guss Scott was placed on IR with a knee injury...The Patriots released LB Wesly Mallard...Defensive end Richard Seymour returned to the practice field this week, and is expected to return to the field in Week 8... League Notes ESPN reports the Saints are likely done with New Orleans, and will move the team next season...Due to Hurricane Wilma, the Chiefs-Dolphins game was moved to Friday in order to beat the weather due to hit the Miami area over the weekend. This is the third such move affecting the Dolphins since 2004...The League fined Saints head coach $20,000 for his post game comments against the officials...Bucs QB Brian Griese is out for the season with a knee injury. Chris Simms will start for Tampa Bay...The Bucs traded a 2006 draft pick for 49ers QB Tim Rattay to fill in the void left by Griese's injury...Seattle safety Ken Hamlin was hospitalized and in an ICU unit after he was severely beaten while coming out of a Seattle night club early Monday morning... Signs of the Apocalypse Hurricanes. Need I get into details? Top Ten List of the Week 1. The Patriots had two things going for them this week. The Bye and being in the pitiful AFC East. 2. Dallas blew that game in Seattle on Sunday. Of course when push came to shove, Bledsoe tossed an INT right when he shouldn't have. Plus, Terry Glenn blew two pass plays, one also went for an INT, the other one did. 3. Manning No. 3's stock went up with that late fourth quarter come-back to win over Denver. Nothing like taking the wind out of an opponent's sails. 4. Nice kicking, Josh Brown. Nice kicking. 5. Even though Louisianans have little use for the Saints, it would be a shame for the team to move from a less exciting city (like San Antonio or LA). The Big Easy may not be a natural football town like Green Bay, but it is a helluva town all by itself. 6. Speaking of Green Bay, there is a massive black cloud over Wisconsin these days. 7. Now it'll be interesting to see how a Jeff Garcia-led Lions offense works. 8. I find it so fascinating how the Eagles start off tripping over themselves in September, and then turn on the juice to move to front of the line nice and quiet like. Ever notice that? 9. Not to Houston Front Office: Start over in '06. 10. I keep looking at the injury report around the league, and seeing all these guys go on IR. Personally, I am sick of injuries. Why can't everyone just stay healthy? 24 October 2005 | ||
