With one pen, any man can rule...

A Word from The Writer:

The Monday Analysis - 23 January 2006

We've got out Super Bowl teams. And much to the pundits, they are a surprise. It's just, well, they're not Jakes going to the big game.

AFC Championship Game

Pittsburgh 34
Denver 17

Don't tell the Steelers that it's Defense that wins. Plain and simple for Pittsburgh, it is just playing on the road with the hostility at an all time high.

And the Steelers win their third straight road game 34-17 over the Denver Broncos.

Jerome Bettis held on to the ball tighter, got a pair of touchdowns, and is headed home for quite possibility his final professional game in Detroit for Super Bowl XL.

Ben Roethlisberger, 21-29 for 275 yards, 2 TDs, 124.9 rating, played like a veteran. Forget the deer-in-the-headlights act of last season. He seemed to learn a wealth of experience since then. Today nothing bugged him, as no road crowd has bugged him all month.

Jake Plummer resorted back to the Arizona Plummer, the Snake who was more like the Mistake, the guy you just waited to make that bad throw. We've waiting all season for it, and it finally showed up on Sunday. Plummer was 18-30 for 223 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs with a 66.4 rating.

At 1:55 left in the first half, Phil Simms of CBS said, "The first thing you have to do is be careful." Plummer then threw twenty yards to Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor. So much for being careful.

The Steelers had complete control at the half, leading 24-3. It stayed with them right through to the end.

''It feels great today, I'll tell you that,'' said owner Dan Rooney, an original owner in the AFL. ''The coach already told me we're going to the Super Bowl to win it, not just to be there.''

The Broncos, instead of planning Super Bowl events, were handed their first home loss of the season.

''It's tough,'' Plummer said. ''They were getting after it and when they got a lead, we get one dimensional.''

The Steelers certainly know what it is like to go undefeated at home and then lose it in the AFC Championship game. That happened to them last season. This year they were the sixth seed instead of the one seed, and were handed three road games on the way to Detroit.

''It's amazing, especially to have done it all on the road,'' Steelers receiver Antwaan Randle-El said.

This is head coach Bill Cowher's second trip to the Super Bowl in his 14 seasons as head coach with the Steelers. He went in 1996 for Super Bowl XXX with a 27-17 loss to Dallas. In that game, Neil O'Donnell threw two interceptions for Cowboy touchdowns. Both were to MVP Larry Brown who scored twice.

This is also Cowher's sixth AFC Championship game since 1994. They've lost four of them, all at home.

One more road game, and career finale for the Bus. The Steelers are off to the big game.

NFC Championship Game

Carolina 14
Seattle 34

In September, there were seven teams who had never been to a Super Bowl: Arizona, Detroit, Cleveland, Houston, Jacksonville, New Orleans, and Seattle.

Cross Seattle off that list.

It took seven long rebuilding years, some stripped duties and near dismissals, but Mike Holmgren has the Seahawks going to the Super Bowl.

Matt Hasselbeck was completely in control, 20-28 for 219 yards, 2 TDs, 118 rating. Hasselbeck's father, Don, was a tight end for the Patriots, and the family grew up in Westwood.

Shaun Alexander was a monster. 32 carries for 132 yards and 2 TDs.

Rookie linebacker Lofa Tatupu is another son of a former Patriot, Mosi of the great Patriots teams in the 1970s and 1980s, and also grew up locally. Tatupu had an interception, one of Jake Delhomme's three on the day.

And speaking of inefficient, Delhomme was 15-35, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 24.9 rating.

The time of possession was a huge factor. Seattle held the ball for 41:51 compared to Carolina's 18:09. Steve Smith was triple and quadrupled teamed all night, held in check. On the sideline, Smith was frustrated, insisted he go out for a punt return, which ended up in Carolina's first touchdown on the night. He had 5 catches for 33 yards on the night.

One more late game touchdown out of desperation would give the Panthers a narrower gap, but it was well over by then.

''We have an unbelievable team, an unbelievable group of fans,'' Shaun Alexander said of the 12th Man.

Mike Holmgren becomes the fifth coach to take two teams to the Super Bowl. He took Green Bay to back-to-back games in Super Bowl XXXI and XXXII. John Fox was looking for his second trip in three seasons, but it didn't turn out that way for him.

"I don't know if we ran out of gas," John Fox said. "I'm not sure what the problem was. Their defense played tremendous. We knew we'd have our hands full with their offense. We didn't play well enough in all three phases to win."

And out of gas is what Carolina is all about now. They go home. Seattle goes to Detroit.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

The Playoff ranks shove the pretenders to the bottom.
1. Seattle (15-3). One observation. That Seattle crowd. They poise themselves as the 12th Player, even have "12" flags flying all over the stands. Since when did Seattle fans become so rabid. Bravo!
2. Pittsburgh (14-5).  Nice job again Steelers. Three road games in hostile environments. Three wins. On to Detroit.
4. (tie) Carolina (13-6). They played so well, and then tripped and fell on Sunday. Sad.
4. (tie) Denver (14-4).  9-0 at home. Oops. That would 9-1 now.
5. Chicago (11-6). More Offense, Lovie. More Offense.
6. Indy (14-3). This was possibly the best Colts team ever. Now what will happen?
7. New England (11-7). Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.
8. Washington (11-7). Joe Gibbs caught a whiff of the playoffs this year, but will it be enough to more on in 2006?
9. Cincinnati (11-6). Here's hoping Carson Palmer returns, Marvin Lewis.
10. Tampa Bay (11-6). For Jon Gruden, 2005 is the start.
11. Jacksonville (12-5). The Jags need more maturing.
12.  NJ Giants (11-6). It's a long road up for the Giants.

Coaching Carousel

Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini accepted the New Jersey Jets head coaching position. The deal is worth $2 million - $2.5 million a year for four years.

The Patriots immediately announced the promotion of linebackers coach Dean Pees as the new Defensive Coordinator. Pees has been with the Patriots since 2004. Prior to New England, he was head coach of Kent State.

More Patriots coaching news. Bill Belichick promoted quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels to Offensive Coordinator. McDaniels handled much of the play calling in 2005, sharing duties with Belichick himself and quarterback Tom Brady. McDaniels joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant in 2001, and served on the defensive coaching staff for three seasons before becoming the quarterbacks coach in 2004. At 29, McDaniels is the league's youngest coordinator.

The 49ers hired former Raiders head coach Norv Turner as their offensive coordinator. The position has been vacant since Mike McCarthy took the Packers head coaching job.

Vikings head coach Brad Childress hired Eric Bieniemy to coach the running backs, and Karl Dunbar to coach the defensive line. Also hired are Tom Kanavy as Head Strength and Conditioning coach and Eric Sugarman as Head Athletic Trainer.

Colts head coach Tony Dungy was skeptical about his return to the team for 2006, but later said he intended to return, but would take some time off before beginning work for the 2006 offseason program.

The Packers and defensive coordinator Jim Bates have agreed to go their separate ways.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy then promoted defensive line coach Bob Sanders to Defensive Coordinator.

The Saints hired Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton as their next head coach. Bad news for Dallas, as now QB Drew Bledsoe and the offense will need to learn yet another new system. Payton has been the quarterbacks coach for three seasons. He was with the Giants in 2000 as an assistant when they went to Super Bowl XXXV.

The Lions hired former Buccaneers assistant head coach and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli. Marinelli was with Tampa Bay for 10 seasons as their defensive line coach. Prior to the Bucs, Marinelli began his coaching career in 1973 coaching in the high school and college ranks.

The San Diego Chargers fired offensive line coach Carl Mauck and assistant secondary coach Albert Lewis.

The Rams hired former Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Scott Linehan as their new head coach. Linehan is 42, and was the Vikings offensive coordinator for three years before going to Miami. Before the NFL, Linehan coached in the college ranks for 14 years beginning in 1989.

Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Al Saunders is joining Joe Gibbs in Washington after five seasons with the Chiefs. Saunders does not yet have an official title, but will join Gibbs and assistant head coach Joe Bugel and offensive coordinator Don Breaux in trying to improve Washington's weak offense.

Former Buffalo head coach Mike Mularkey has been offered the offensive coordinator job in Miami, recently vacated by Scott Linehan.

Reports indicated former Detroit interim coach Dick Jauron will become the next head coach in Buffalo, leaving the Belichick University of the AFC East only at a trifecta (Belichick in New England, former Belichick defensive coordinator Eric Mangini in New Jersey, former Belichick defensive coordinator Nick Saban in Miami). Jauron was head coach for Chicago for five seasons, and got the bears to a 13-3 season in 2001, earning Coach of the Year honors. Jauron has been defensive coordinator in Detroit for two season. He is a former assistant in Green Bay under Mike Holmgren.

Now that Denver is done, Houston is prepared to name Broncos Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak the new head coach for the Texans.

The Browns promoted offensive line coach Jeff Davidson to assistant head coach. Davidson worked with head coach Romeo Crennel in New England as the tight ends coach.

League Notes

Redskins defensive end Ray Brown has retired. The 43 year-old called it a career after twenty seasons...USC Quarterback and NFL hopeful Matt Leinart hired Leigh Steinberg and Chuck Price as his agents. Steinberg is no stranger to top pick quarterbacks. He once had Drew Bledsoe, Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Warren Moon (not to mention Ryan Leaf) as his clients.

Notes and Quotes

Through three quarters, Carolina QB Jake Delhomme had a Quarterback rating of 1.5. He finished the day at 34.9.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. Congratulations to Pittsburgh and XXX on their advancement to Super Bowl Xtra Large.

2. I am changing my Defensive Rookie of the Year to Lofa Tatupu of Seattle. Lofa is a local boy, the son of Patriots great Mosi Tatupu. High energy player, big plays.

3. Apparently everyone picked Carolina to just steamroll into Detroit. Man, were they wrong!

4. So much for Concussions. Nice game, Shaun Alexander.

5. Great football weekend. All four coaches have been to a Super Bowl. Mike Shanahan won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. Mike Holmgren went twice with Green Bay, winning Super Bowl XXXI and losing Super Bowl XXXII. Bill Cowher lost Super Bowl XXX. And John Fox lost Super Bowl XXXVIII.

6. Bad luck for Carolina. All three of their top runners ended up not seeing action in this game. Nick Goings was knocked up in the first half, taking the limited run game to nearly nothing.

7. NBC announced they were canceling the Emmy award winning political drama "The West Wing." Man, the Dems can't win in real life or in fiction.

8. Should there be any surprise Oakland is the only team still with a coaching vacancy? Are they picky or are the candidate less desperate for work?

9. There is no doubt Eric Mangini will make a good head coach - someday. The Jets were the only team interested in the Patriots' 34 year-old defensive coordinator. My thoughts are that this is going to be a disaster. The Jets are a mess, and Mangini will find out very quickly not everything is the Land of Kraft. Best of luck, Eric.

10. Speaking of coaching moves, the ten vacancies, only 2 of the 9 slots are filled with former coaches. Herman Edwards, of course, pulled his switch-a-roo, and Dick Jauron gets another shot as the head man.
