A Word from The Writer:

The Monday Analysis - 21 November 2005

Two wins in a row, finally, and man, it is sweet.

Pats Down Hobbling Saints

The final 24-17 started off a blow out with the Patriots single-handedly handling the homeless Saints. But in traditional 2005 Patriots fashion, they (particularly the Defense) let New Orleans hang around long enough to make it a game at the end.

Tom Brady again led the charge, passing 15 for 29 for 222 yards, 3 TDs, and a 111.6 passer rating. In the third quarter he found Andre Davis for a 60 yard touchdown reception.

Corey Dillon was out again with a leg injury, giving Heath Evans more playing time. Evans, the wonder pick-up of the mid season replacements, rushed for 76 yards on 12 carries. Patrick Pass also returned to the line up (insert stats here).

Once again, however, a sub par team managed to control the clock better than the Patriots, with the Patriots winning in the end. The Saints held the ball for 32:46 to the Patriots 27:14. But penalties creamed New Orleans, particularly three personal fouls on Will Smith, and why he wasn't ejected from the game is a mystery.

Aaron Brooks also passed actively against New England, going 27 for 50 for 343 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT.

"I'd rather we got the win," Brooks said after the game.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made a brief statement on the game, then a short statement on the passing of his father the night before, and did not take any questions. Belichick told the team of his dad after the game, and presumably only told Patriots owner Robert Kraft before the game. Kraft presented Belichick with the game ball in the locker room after the game, and then Belichick was escorted to Kraft's private jet, where he flew to Maryland to be with his grieving mother and make arrangements for his father's funeral. Belichick is an only child. In his absence, offensive line coach and assistant head coach Dante Scarnecchia will assume duties.

"He was a great man, and he raised a great son," Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said after the game of the senior and junior Belichick. Brady also stated he did not know of the passing until after the game when the coach told the team.

LB Willie McGinest came up big on Defense, registering 8 pressure situations against the pass, two deflected passes, and a sack on Brooks. Ellis Hobbs stepped up his play in the secondary, hammering receivers harder and harder each time they came within sight, and ending the game with an interception in the endzone.

Elder Coach Belichick Passes Away at 86

Steve Belichick, the father of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, passed away Saturday night of heart failure at the age of 86.

The elder Belichick coached for the Navy Academy for 33 years, and played full back for the Detroit Lions.

Coach Belichick made a brief statement to the press at his post game conference saying his father spent a typical Saturday watch college football, and having dinner with friends.

The elder Belichick was a tremendous influence to the the Patriots head coach as a young boy teaching him how to break down film and sitting in on meetings at Navy.

Coach Belichick said this during his post game press conference:

"Obviously, he had a tremendous influence on my life personally and, particularly in the football aspect, it was great to be able to share the tremendous memories with him and some of our recent successes, as I did when I was a kid when he was successful as a coach of the Naval Academy and that program."

Steve Belichick is survived by his wife, Jeannette, one son, Bill, and three grandchildren.

The Monday Analysis extends extreme condolences to the Belichicks.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

As we approach the fourth quarter of the season, the games get bigger, and this list becomes more important.
1. Indy (10-0). If Indy continues to win right through the Super Bowl, the odds are that the Colts could own the consecutive win streak in mid September of 2006.
2. Denver (8-2). If Denver has to meet Indy in the post season, and it looks like they might, the Broncos have two years of angst building up against the Colts to fire back at them.
3. NJ Giants (7-3). How eerie and ironic. The Giants are winning games and losing owners.
4. Cincinnati (7-3). The Bengals needed to step it up on Defense and stop the Colts, and they didn't do it.
5. Carolina (7-3). The Panthers were handed a pretty good loss from the Bears. No longer the hottest team.
6. Dallas (7-3). The Parcells Machines continues, and he has the Cowboys as unsatisfied and grumpy as he is.
7. Seattle (8-2). I still don't know what to make of the 'Hawks. They are winning and no one is noticing.
8. Chicago (7-3). Hottest team in the league. Lovie Smith is working miracles in the great white North.
9. Pittsburgh (7-3). I think the Steelers need Big Ben back.
10. New England (6-4). A two win streak. Next week in Kansas City is their biggest hurdle for the rest of the season.
11. Atlanta (6-4). I feel like the Falcons are slipping a little.
12.  Tampa Bay (7-3). Jon Gruden's best season so far in four years. But the Bucs are still suspect.

Weekend Break Down

Cardinals (3-7) 38, RAMS (4-6) 28 - FINAL: Wow, Kurt Warner beat his former team. Amazing. And he did it in Old School Warner fashion, 27-39 for 285 yards, 3 TDs. This sucker was a shoot out. Steven Jackson only had 12 carries for 6 yards. Marc Bulger went 19-24 for 224 yards and 2 TDs before leaving with a shoulder injury, and handing the ball to Jamie Martin who went 14-19 for 161 yards and 1 TD.

COWBOYS (7-3) 20, Lions (4-6) 7 - FINAL: The Turkey Hosts clash it out, and Julius Jones makes the difference, rushing 92 yards. The rest of the numbers of terrible.

GIANTS (7-3) 27, Eagles (4-6) 17 - FINAL: There's a new sheriff in the NFC East.

Raiders (4-6) 16 REDSKINS (5-5) 13 - FINAL: Joe Gibbs must be beside himself today. He is still getting slammed by Al Davis.

BEARS (7-3) 13 Panthers (7-3) 3 - FINAL: The Lovie Smith Machine rolls on, slapping the Panthers around.

BROWNS (4-6) 22, Dolphins (3-7) 0 - FINAL: Hey Nick Saban, what happened? Romeo Crennel happened, that's what. How much mileage did Crennel get off of last week's game tape versus the Patriots?

Buccaneers (7-3) 30, FALCONS (6-4) 27 - FINAL: Close one, Jon Gruden, and the Bucs edge themselves in a dead heat for the NFC South.

PATRIOTS (6-4) 24, Saints (2-8) 17 - FINAL: Not pretty towards the end, but the Patriots finally have a winning streak this season.

Jaguars (7-3) 31, TITANS (2-8) 28 - FINAL: I can't believe that the Titans we able to match up this close on the Jags. Jacksonville is hanging in the playoff hunt.

RAVENS (3-7) 16, Steelers (7-3) 13 - FINAL/OT: Whoa! The Ravens show life and expose weaknesses in the Steelers.

SEAHAWKS (8-2) 27, 49ERS (2-8) 25 - FINAL: Not a surprising result, but certainly a surprisingly close score.

COLTS (10-0) 45, BENGALS (7-3) 37 - FINAL: Ugh! Will someone please just beat the Mannings. Please.

BRONCOS (8-2) 27, JETS (2-8) 0 - FINAL: How does this happen? Do the Jets have no pride in themselves?

CHARGERS (6-4) 48, BILLS (4-6) 10 - FINAL: Even in throw-back pasty blue, the Chargers dominate.

Chiefs (6-4) 45, TEXANS (1-9) 17 - FINAL: Poor Houston. No matter how hard they try, they always seem to trip and fall.

Minnesota (4-5) at Green Bay (2-7) Tonight 9 PM ABC

Signs of the Apocalypse

Peyton Manning still winning. I am so sick of hearing about the Colts I could choke. Even worse, I will actually be cheering for Pittsburgh in Week 12.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. The Monday extends condolences to Coach Bill Belichick and his family in the passing of his father, Steve Belichick.

2. The Year after for the Super Bowl runner-ups continues to be a curse. The Eagles dropped their fourth straight.

3. Da Bears' defense hasn't been this good since 1985. For the fans of Chicago, this year has been a long time coming.

4. I can't believe that both the Jets and Dolphins got goose-egged this weekend. For Jersey, they went through all three quarterbacks, starting with Brooks Bollinger to Vinny Testeverde to former Patriots quarterback toss out Kliff Kingsbury.

5. I know the Patriots offense needs to do more because the defense has so many holes, but is it me, or is Tom Brady really looking as good as I think he is looking? His numbers are leading the league. He's passing for two, even three touchdowns in a game and not tossing turnovers. It's like Tom Brady of old mixed with, well, a dynamic hall of fame passer, a la Joe Montana/Steve Young/Dan Marino. Right now, and I don't care what you say, Tom Brady is a better quarterback than Peyton Manning ever could be. Ever.

6. The money has TO in Dallas next season. Can you imagine him, Keyshawn, and Terry Glenn fighting over Bledsoe passes? Bledsoe may never have another incompletion.

7. It is one thing to be able to goose-egg Miami, but give Romeo Crennel and the Browns some credit. They obviously examined last week's game against the Patriots, and the players executed to a T. Nice work.

8. The Patriots have had the worst of the worst of the worst of the worst this season, and to be 6-4, I think, is remarkable. List them out: injuries ending the season of 60% of the secondary, the hardest first half schedule in NFL history, holes in the defensive line, absences in the offense, the head coach's marriage is splitting up, then his dad passes away. Expect more bad after bad after bad. But I would love nothing more - absolutely nothing more - than to see them win it all, and be able to thumb their noses at the league and say, "You tossed us the worst of the worst of the worst of the worst, and we beat all of you!" That is something I need to see!

9. The Chiefs' proposal for stadium renovations at Arrowhead seem ridiculous. At $500 million, you could built a new state-of-the-art facility, and not miss a beat with construction schedulings.

10. Happy Thanksgiving, and enjoy the games!
