With one pen, any man can rule...

A Word from The Writer:

The Monday Analysis - 19 December 2005

What a wild football weekend! Playoff spots were won and loss left and right. Streaks extended and others ended. But first, there's a Defense living in Foxboro, and they're wearing Patriots uniforms.

Patriots Pillage the Bucs

The Patriots have a genuine streak - finally. Three in a row.

Want more numbers? They beat the Bucs 28-0. Goose-egged. And Tampa is a good team, was leading the NFC South. More numbers? The Patriots have outscored opponents during this little streak 79-10.

"It's huge for us. We haven't really played a good game against a good opponent with a good record," tight end Christian Fauria said. "We needed to keep winning and trying to get better in December."

Head coach Bill Belichick also remained low-key, and kept the game result in focus.

"We're happy that we've done that (clinching the AFC East title) and now we'll still take it one week at a time and do everything we can to keep improving as a football team," Belichick said after the game.

He also noticed the improvement in the Patriots, and when it started.

"I think we have gotten better in the last month since probably, well, I think we made progress the middle of the season, but since the Kansas City game, that was really a pretty poor performance, coaching and playing."

Chris Simms was 21-34 for 155 yards with 2 fumbles. He was also sacked 7 times, twice by Willie McGinest and twice by Tedy Bruschi. Mike Vrabel, Artrell Hawkins, and Rosevelt Colvin also had sacks. Simms knows who just beat him.

''Until someone beats them in the playoffs, they're the best team in the NFL,'' Simms said. And his head coach Jon Gruden echoed the comment.

"Who doubts them? Right now the people that doubt them, let’s put their names in the newspaper so New England knows who they are. I don’t know how you doubt them. They have the best quarterback in the league," Gruden said. "The coach is a great coach, and they are a physical, veteran-laden team. They are a handful. That is my opinion."

Tom Brady was 20-31 for 258 yards, 3 TDs. His first touchdown pass was to offensive lineman Tom Ashworth playing fullback. It was Ashworth's first NFL reception.

"He's a pretty versatile player," Belichick said, "and he has some experience in our system, played tight end in college and all of that. He is used to playing on the end of the line, not so much in the backfield."

David Givens also came up big with six receptions for 137 yards and a score. Corey Dillon had limited yardage on the ground - 19 carries for 48 yards - but had a touchdown on the ground and one in the air.

"I think there has definitely been improvement in a lot of areas," Tom Brady said. "I think we are still looking to improve. It's like we have our stretches in every game where there are things that go really well and you build some momentum, and then we have a few stretches where we just kind of shoot ourselves in the foot."

The Defense played aggressive once again, and took advantage of an inexperienced quarterback.

"We knew what was at stake when we stepped out on the field," said linebacker Rosevelt Colvin. "Guys were flying around making plays." Colvin has recorded a sack in four straight games.

With the win, the Patriots clinch the AFC East, but Tedy Bruschi wasn't impressed with the t-shirt.

''I just don't want one T-shirt,'' he said. ''I want two more.''

So does all of Patriots Nation.

"This is what you get for clinching the division," Fauria said. "You get a hat and I also got a T-shirt so it doesn't really mean anything. It doesn't put a ring on your finger. It doesn't get you into the Super Bowl."

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

1. Indy (13-1). What annoyed me the most about the Mannings, and it is the big reason why I am sipping Champaign with the '72 Dolphins today, is that with :31 seconds left, the Colts offense came on to the field down by nine points, and ran plays to try and get a score. Indy, you lost. Why risk injury to try and preserve your pathetic pride?  Sad, sad, sad.
2. Seattle (12-2). They host Indy next week. You think the 'Hawks aren't going to be fired up about slamming the Colts? You betcha!
3. Denver (10-3). Winning with efficiency, and nearing towards the AFC West crown.
4. Cincinnati (11-3). A Division Title T-shirt for Marvin Lewis.
5. Carolina (10-4). Carolina might be even quieter than Seattle these days.
6. Chicago (10-4). Complete control of the NFC North.
7. New England (9-5). Big win on Saturday for a third straight win. One of the hottest teams running.
8. NJ Giants (10-4). One step closer to the NFC East title.
9. Pittsburgh (9-5). Big win over Minnesota this week. Good thing the Steelers stayed away from cruise ships this year.
10. Tampa Bay (9-5). Jon Gruden took a big step backwards on Saturday with the goose-egg loss to New England. Got to do better than that, Jon.
11. Jacksonville (10-4). Looking to wrap up a Wild Card spot.
12.  San Diego (9-5). Huge win over Indy tosses them back on this list.

The rest of league has been forewarned.

Now, on to the action of Week 15.

Weekend Break Down

PATRIOTS (9-5) 28, Buccaneers (9-5) 0 - FINAL: Whammo! Slammo! The Patriots Defense and Tom Brady are rolling the Machine to a new level in 2005. The Bucs were helpless, and Chris Simms looked every bit the young player he is.

GIANTS (10-4) 27, Chiefs (8-6) 17 - FINAL: Tiki Barber breaks a very old Giants single game rushing record to catapult New Jersey two games above the rest of the NFC East, while KC pretty much takes themselves out of the January Dance.

Broncos (11-3) 28, BILLS (4-10) 17 - FINAL: Poor Buffalo. Can't win at home, or the road, or the cold. Denver remains the leader of the AFC West, and slides into the Western Title. Lots of penalties, 9-90 for Denver, 12-82 for Buffalo.

TEXANS (2-12) 30, Cardinals (4-10) 19 - FINAL: All right! Houston gets their second win! Way to go!

Seahawks (12-2) 28, TITANS (4-10) 24 - FINAL: Seattle keeps on keeping on. They've quietly dominated the NFC. Close game on the road, but Shaun Alexander rushes for 172 yards and 1 TDs to help move the ball in the right direction.

Chargers (9-5) 26, COLTS (13-1) 17 - FINAL: It's over. All the reporters can now leave Indianapolis and we can all stop the drive for perfection talk. San Diego dominated the first half defensively, shutting out the Colts. The Offense needs lots of work. Three trips to the redzone got them only one touchdown, and had to settle for 2 field goals (made by the very capable Nate Kaeding, who ended the day with four field goals, two at 48 and 49 yards). Drew Brees tossed an interception and fumbled in the third quarter to give Indy redzone field position. In the end, Michael Turner ran an 83-yard touchdown nearing the two minute warning and an interception by Quentin Jammer in the endzone with 1:46 remaining sealed the win for the Chargers. Game over. No more perfection. Ain't it beautiful?

Steelers (9-5) 18, VIKINGS (8-6) 3 - FINAL: Bad Thumb on Big Ben? No problem. The Vikes had a rough week, and those off-field problems filtered over to the game.

DOLPHINS (7-7) 24, Jets (3-11) 20 - FINAL: Dog fight in the AFC East, with the Jets losing again. The Dolphins are on the verge of a winning season with Nick Saban. Miami, with a remote chance for the playoffs, is eliminated with San Diego and Pittsburgh wins.

Eagles (6-8) 17, RAMS (5-9) 16 - FINAL: Close one in St. Louis. Two bad teams battling, and Mike McMahon tosses three interceptions before tossing the game-winning touchdown.

JAGUARS (10-4) 10, 49ers (2-12) 9 - FINAL: How does a playoff-caliber team end up with a score like this with the 49ers? Bad, bad, bad.

Panthers (10-4) 27, SAINTS (3-11) 10 - FINAL: Jake Delhomme reeks more revenge on the team who gave up on him, and Carolina has sole possession of the NFC South. Saints fill-in QB Todd Bouman had four interceptions and a forced fumble. Should have stayed with Brooks.

Bengals (11-3) 41, LIONS (4-10) 17 - FINAL: It took fifteen seasons, but this is the win that gets Cinci the AFC North. Bravo, Marvin Lewis.

Browns (5-9) 9, RAIDERS (4-10) 7 - FINAL: Big road win for Romeo and his Browns.

REDSKINS (8-6) 35, Cowboys (8-6) 7 - FINAL: What happened to the Dallas Machine? They got clobbered, that's what happened.

BEARS (9-4) 16, Falcons (8-5) 3 - FINAL: Cold reception for Michael Vick, who looked as bad as the score. Big surprise for Chicago. Rex Grossman comes in and produces.

Green Bay (3-10) at Baltimore (4-9)  Tonight 9 PM ABC

Playoff Outlook

If ya ain't outside the red, ya stink this year.

Draft Picking in December

New Jersey (3-11): Herm Edwards is flying off to Loserville.
Buffalo (4-10): The Quarterback Flipping didn't exactly do the Bills in this season. But the quarterbacks choices probably did.
Oakland (4-10): Next year, oh forget it. Oakland won't change until Al Davis is gone.
Cleveland (5-9): Romeo Crennel has plans for next year, but they probably don't include a lot of this year's roster.
Baltimore (4-9): Maybe it is time for Brian Billick to move on.
Houston (2-12): The Texans are just going backwards.
Tennessee (4-10): Reformulate for '06, Jeff Fisher.
Philadelphia (6-8): Next, there will be no Super Bowl Runner-Up Curse, Andy Reid.
Washington (7-7): Joe Gibbs has a lot more work to do to get Dan Snyder a ring.
San Francisco (2-12): Alex Smith this year. Reggie Bush next year?
Arizona (4-10): Denny Green needs to rethink his whole quarterback position.
St. Louis (5-9): Next year, a whole new Rams coaching staff.
Detroit (4-10): Next year, a new coaching staff chosen by a new front office.
Green Bay (3-10): For Brett Favre and Mike Sherman, there might not be a next year.
New Orleans (3-11): The league thinks that by November of next year, the Saints will have the Superdome back. Maybe.
Miami (7-7):
A narrow miss at the playoffs, but a miss just the same.

Teams Dreaming of a Playoff Christmas

Atlanta (8-6): Still chasing the Bucs and the Panthers, but trying to close in.
Minnesota (8-6): Outside distractions this week pushed the Vikes back further into the offseason.
Jacksonville (10-4): The Wild Card is reserved, and Jax just needs to pick up the reservation.
Pittsburgh (9-5): A Wild Card spot could be theirs if the ball bounces the right way.
Kansas City (8-6): KC took a backwards step with the loss to New Jersey/A
San Diego (9-5): Big win in Indy this week keeps them in the hunt.

Teams Just ready to trim that Tree

New Jersey Giants (10-4): In need of another win to get the division.
Dallas (8-6): Dallas is going backwards, and about to get sent to Noplayoffspotville.
Chicago (10-4): Stepping closer and closer to a division title.
Carolina (10-4): Another win and they could wrap up the division.
Tampa Bay (9-5): There is still a chance at a playoff spot despite the loss to New England.

Teams with a Slot in the Post Season

Indy (13-0): Home field throughout the playoffs.
Seattle (12-2): Looking to lock up home field throughout.
New England (9-5):
Third straight Division title, and getting really hot.
Cincinnati (10-3):
Their first division win since 1990.
Denver (11-3):
They have a reservation, but no Division title just yet.

Patriots Notes

QB Tom Brady was listed questionable with a shin injury. Brady missed part of Wednesday's practice...RB Mike Cloud was released again to make room for offensive lineman Russ Tucker, signed to the active roster this week...The Boston Globe reports that former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis attended the Patriots win on Saturday, and was in the locker room after the game...

League Notes

Former Broncos, Giants, and Falcons head coach Dan Reeves accepted a job with the Texans as a football consultant...The Bears waived punt returner Bobby Wade. Wade counted for nine fumbles on specials team and another on offense this season...If things weren't bad enough for the Saints, they are now without their starting quarterback. Aaron Brooks was benched for the season by head coach Jim Haslett, who stated Brooks' anti-Saints front office comments on a sports radio station two weeks ago had nothing to do with the benching. "It's not an indictment of Aaron whatsoever," Haslett said Wednesday. "It's an indictment on our record." Brooks has started 82 straight games. Todd Bouman is the new starting quarterback for the Saints...In more Saints news, the NFL and the Player's Association said they will pay every Saints player who was on the roster or practice squad the entire 2005 season a $40,000 bonus for performing under difficult and extreme conditions this season...Switching quarterbacks in Oakland didn't work out after one week, and Kerry Collins is back starting for the Raiders. Back up Marques Tuiasosopo started in Week 14...Former Raiders first round pick Defensive Tackle Darrell Russell was killed in a car crash in Los Angeles on Thursday. Russell, 29, was the passenger of the car driven by former USC teammate Mike Bastianelli, who was also killed. Russell had been out of the league since 2003 after a series of league suspensions stemming from substance abuse problems...Panthers running back Stephen Davis was placed on IR with a swollen knee...Rams head coach Mike Martz was given medical clearance to rejoin the team January 1, but is unlikely to return...Cardinals QB Kurt Warner is likely out for the rest of the season after injuring his knee against Houston...ESPN reports Saints head coach Jim Haslett will propose a five year extension to Saints owner Tom Benson as year as Monday...

Signs of the Apocalypse

There are two from the Indy - Diego game.

1. The look on Peyton Manning's face at the end is priceless. His face is red, and he looks like he is ready to cry.

2. Manning and the Offense with 31 seconds left trying to get a score down by 9 points. The game was over, and Indy could not deal, could not swallow their pride and just concede. Instead, they risked lots of injuries to try and prove some useless point that they were still competing. Manning is lucky the Defense didn't break through and clean his clock and end his season right there. What a sorry and sad sight.

Notes and Quotes

"Marty Schottenheimer is a great friend of mine, and has become an even better friend now."

- Former Dolphins head coach Don Shula after the Chargers' 26-17 win over the Colts.

Tom Brady has thrown touchdown passes to 12 different receivers this season, a Patriots record.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. Here's to the '72 Dolphins, and that great collection of Champaign bottle corks.

2. The Patriots Defense is starting to get healthy and hot all at once, and just in time. Limiting teams to only 10 points in three weeks scares a lot of teams out there. Hopefully they'll keep it going for another six weeks.

3. Shawne Merriman, the rookie linebacker from San Diego gets my Defensive Player of the Week. He was all over the Peyton Manning, and constantly broke the Indy Offensive Line.  Bravo! Nice work.

4. Congratulations to Marvin Lewis and the Bengals on their Division Title. Well deserved and well earned.

5. Houston brought in Dan Reeves this week as a consultant, and low and behold the Texans get a dominating win.

6. Bravo to Tiki Barber on his 220 yards rushing. What a dominating run game he conducted.

7. The Lions have to overhaul their front office and coaching staff. Fans in Detroit even marched this week to push for Matt Millen's dismissal as team president. Bill Ford, if you are reading this: I, and scores of other fans could do better.

8. Nice Catch, Tom Ashworth.

9. I've said this before, but it needs to be said again. Someone please start a Suzy Kolber network. All Suzy Kolber, all the time. Just twenty-four hours a day of Suzy Kolber.

10. Merry Christmas to all! And to all, a great Week 16.
