A Word from The Writer:

The Monday Analysis - 17 October 2005

Week 6 is here and gone. Just like all the rain in the northeast. Oh, wait. It is still raining, and the Patriots are still blowing it in the big games.

Inconsistent Patriots Look Terrible in Loss to Denver

The New England Pathetics (not a typo) lost another game they never showed up for. Or, well, let's give them some credit. They showed up in the fourth quarter and nearly pulled out a win. Alas, they sucked in Denver, allowing 21 points in the second quarter, which the Pathetics never recovered from.

The highlight of terror in Sunday's game was the final play of the first half, when rookie first pick Logan Mankins got too aggressive in a special teams play, took a cheap shot, personal foul swipe at a Broncos player resulting Mankins' ejection from the game. No, that's ok Rook. Tom Brady doesn't really need the protection.

The Patriots got weak and stupid in the second quarter, giving up 21 unanswered points, and had they played during that quarter, this column might be going into another direction. But it isn't. And I am not going to rattle on about numbers, because what for? The most important numbers - the final score -waved in favor of a third rate city with a 125 media market ranking.

The Patriots lacked a running game, and with Corey Dillon dressed, but not playing (and we can't figure out why, other than his leg injury was ok to play for a playoff game, or in an emergency, but not worth the chance in a Week 6 blow out), there was no power back. Patrick Pass kicked it up as best he could, and Amos Zereoue made his Patriots debut, but he still doesn't know the offense.

The Broncos were able to hold off a Patriots Attack-Comeback in the fourth to end it 28-20.

''We never give up," running back Patrick Pass said. ''We may be down, but we're never out.

Linebacker Mike Vrabel put it all pretty simply.

''At 3-3, you're an average team," Vrabel said. ''When you play good enough to win one and you get down, 28-3, the next, you're going to lose those games. You can't say, 'Well, we rallied back.' 'We're an average football team."

Two big plays down field offensively by the Broncos are becoming too common of a scene for the Patriots defense.

''We gave up big plays and that obviously hurt us," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. ''We try to prevent that every week and we have to do a better job at it."

The secondary is getting burned on the big plays downfield that teams cannot perform normally, but the Patriots are so weak in the defensive backs, and they have not become stronger, the targets are just too easy to not expose.

''We know it's coming," said subdued Patriots safety Eugene Wilson. ''So we've got to be ready for it better. They beat us on those man coverage plays, that's all. We can't let that happen."

Yeah, need to get better. You guys say that every week. How about just getting better, huh? Enough of this average football crap. We've seen plenty of it.

BREAKING NEWS: Bruschi confirms his return in 2005

Multiple media, NFL, and Patriots report indicate linebacker Tedy Bruschi is preparing to return to the Patriots this season, and not wait until 2006 as previously verified by Bruschi himself this summer. Bruschi, a three-time world champion, suffered a stroke in February from a hole in his heart, which was surgically repaired in March. The condition is not considered to be a re-accruing problem.

Bruschi took a step further on Monday and confirmed he would return to the field on Wednesday.

"I want to help this team any way I can," he said Monday at a news conference at Gillette Stadium. "They tell me I can play, I know I can play, so, shoot, let's just play."

The Patriots released a statement this week stating Bruschi has met with multiple neurosurgeons and physicians, and has completely passed the examinations, and is medically clearer to return. Bruschi was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, or PUP, and league guidelines require PUP players to return to the practice field by Week 6, and the teams have three weeks to active that player to the active roster.

Should Bruschi return to the Patriots, it would be in Week 9, a home game versus Indianapolis. Bruschi will also fill a huge void in the Patriots' defense, which has seen injuries outside Bruschi's, plus the retirement of Ted Johnson, and other losses in the off season.

The final decision for his returns lies on Bruschi himself, and his family. A statement from Bruschi's neurosurgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital Dr. David Greer explains the following:

“Physically, Tedy is completely back to normal, and is exceptionally healthy. I have no doubt that he will be able to perform physically at a very high level. Tedy’s safety, on and off the field, has always been our number one priority. At this time, I have advised him that, in my opinion, there are no medical reasons for him to delay his return to football.”

The Patriots respect and continue to support Bruschi, regardless of his decision, and stated the following:

"The Kraft family and the entire Patriots organization want only what is best for Tedy Bruschi and his family and will continue to support his decision."

Should Bruschi return at all, it would be considered one of the biggest comebacks in sports in recent years.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

As we pass through to the second quarter of the season, we're seeing some solid shapes - and some flimsiness.
1. Indy (5-0). Not playing until Monday? Why move?
2. Cincinnati (5-1). Winning again this week? Why move?
3. Denver (5-1). Beating the world champs in pathetic fashion? Why move?
4. Tampa Bay (5-1). No Cadillac Williams, but still winning the Battle for Florida? Why Move?
5. San Diego (3-2). Kickin' butt over a divisional rival? Why move?
6. Dallas (4-2). Double wins over divisional rivals, the top spot of the NFC East, and new found respect? Move on up!
7. Atlanta (4-2). Winning in a tough division? Move on up!
8. Carolina (3-2).  Lose Jake Delhomme and still win? Move on up?
9. New England (3-3). Terrible playing, big losses, stupid playing? Move down, and prepare and get off this list.
10. Pittsburgh (3-2). Loss in OT? Move down.
11. Washington (3-2). Was 3-0, now 0-2 in last two? Move down.
12. NJ Giants (3-2). Big divisional loss? Move down.

Weekend Break Down

Jaguars (4-2) 23, STEELERS (3-2) 17 - FINAL/OT: Yes! Steelers lose! In overtime! No Big Ben! Maddox can't do it! Yes!

BEARS (2-3) 28, Vikings (1-4) 3 - FINAL: This year's Vikings clean up was clearing out Randy Moss. Next year will include Mice Tice, most of the coaching staff, most of the players, especially the partiers, and probably the grounds crew for good measure. Minnesota is in need of a change.

Bengals (5-1) 31, TITANS (2-4) 23 - FINAL: No more Bungles. I have to find a new city from O-HI-O to goof on.

CHIEFS (3-2) 28, Redskins (3-2) 21 - FINAL: The Redskins started 3-0, and have lost ever since. I'm not sure what Joe Gibbs is doing anymore.

Falcons (4-2) 34, SAINTS (2-4) 31 - FINAL: A controversial call takes away a 'home' win for the Saints. And Jim Haslett isn't happy. But, the league will fine him anyway for his post game comments, that included calling the officials' penalty call "chickenshit."

BUCCANEERS (5-1) 27, Dolphins (2-3) 13 - FINAL: With the loss of Brian Griese, Chris Simms is able to step in and capture a Bucs win.

Panthers (4-2) 21, LIONS (2-3) 20 - FINAL: Carolina squeezes a win, but they might have lost Delhomme, Morgan, and Peppers.

RAVENS (2-3) 16, Browns (2-3) 3 - FINAL: The Ravens Offense showed up. The Browns Offense did not.

COWBOYS (4-2) 16, Giants (3-2) 13 - FINAL/OT: Big comeback in Big D. The New Drew spawns the New Cowboys, the New Parcells, the New Keyshawn, the New everything in Dallas. Big OT victory over a divisional - for the second week in a row.

BILLS (3-3) 27, Jets (2-4) 17 - FINAL: Newsflash: JP Losman has maybe lost his job forever to Kelly Holcomb. While Holcomb is not a long term solution in Buffalo, Losman obvious is not either.

Chargers (3-3) 27, RAIDERS (1-4) 14 - FINAL: Martyball is back on track, and killing divisionals.

BRONCOS (5-1) 28, Patriots (3-3) 20 - FINAL: Lots of bad playing by the Patriots, but nothing worse than 21 unanswered points given up by the defense in the second quarter.

SEAHAWKS (3-2) 42, Texans (0-5) 10 - FINAL: No comment required. Time for a Texans Overhaul.

Open date: Arizona, Green Bay, Philadelphia, San Francisco

Oddities of Week 9's Matchups

Green Bay (1-4) at Minnesota (1-4) 1 PM. NFC Northern between two teams in need of a win.

Indianapolis (5-0) at Houston (0-5) 1 PM. AFC Southerner trap game for the Colts. The winless Texans are hungry.

Pittsburgh (3-2) at Cincinnati (5-1) 1 PM. AFC Northerner. In the past, this was a Steeler win. Not anymore.

Open date: Carolina, Jacksonville, New England, Tampa Bay

Patriots News

Free Safety Arturo Freeman signed with the Patriots this week...Corey Dillon dressed for Sunday's game in Denver but did not play....Kevin Faulk, Richard Seymour, and Troy Brown were among the inactive players in Sunday's Game...RB Amos Zereoue made his Patriots debut in the Denver loss...

League Notes

The Saints continue to have the worst luck in the league. Running Back Deuce McAllister torn his ACL in the game against Green Bay, and is likely out for the season...Falcons linebacker Ed Hartwell had surgery to repair an injured Achilles, and is done for the season...Rams head coach Mike Martz is out indefinitely with an infection in his heart. Martz was on the sidelines for last Sunday's loss to Seattle, but checked himself into a hospital on Monday as his condition worsened. The Rams do not know how long Matrz will be out for; team president John Shaw told NFL Network there was no time table, but assumed it would be minimally two to four weeks before Martz can return. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt takes the helm in the interim...Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hyper extended his knee and bruised the bone in Monday night's win over San Diego, but an MRI showed no long term damage. He was third on the Steelers' depth chart this week...Browns running back Lee Suggs broke his right thumb in Sunday's game, which required surgery to insert two screws to hold it together. He could be out of action up to a month...The Saints traded a seventh round pick to the Dolphins for RB Jesse Chatman to help fill the void as Deuce McAllister is out for the season...Bucs cornerback Ronde Barber was fined $30,000 for accidentally striking official Butch Hannah in last Sunday's game versus the Jets. The incident occurred during a scuffle with Jets center Kevin Mawae. Hannah was trying to break the altercation up. By league rules, Barber should have been ejected from the game, but was not. He plans to appeal the fine...The Browns and frequently injured tight end Kellon Winslow, Jr. are nearing a new contract agreement. The new deal includes a one-year extension and recuperation of bonus money Winslow lost that past two years due to season ending injuries. The new deal runs the contract to 2010m, and incentives to earn up to $1 million he will lose this season. An addition $2 million can also be earned back that is now intended to be lost...The Giants and TE Jeremy Shockey agreed to a seven year deal (actually a five year extension) worth $30.1 million. The deal includes $11.9 million in bonuses...49ers linebacker Jeff Ulbrich had season-ending surgery to reattach his biceps muscle to his arm...

Steelers WR Hines Ward sat out Sunday's game....RB Fred Taylor of Jacksonville also sat out Sunday's game with a sprained ankle...Jets Guard Kevin Mawae injured his elbow, and is out for the season with torn triceps...Bucs QB Brian Griese left the game with a sprained ankle...Cardinals defensive end Calvin Pace is out for the season after falling through a window and cutting his arm...

Signs of the Apocalypse

Jake Plummer should change his PR picture that CBS uses during the games. With that mustache, he looks like a felon.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. If Tedy Bruschi does return this season, expect a big change in the defense, namely with the lack of production from the veterans. Bruschi's leadership is an obvious void right now.

2. Besides the return of Bruschi, the Patriots need to get back to basics, something they do not have going for them yet this 2005 season.

3. The Machine in Dallas is a force now. They have control of the NFC East for the first time in ages, and for the first time in too long, the Eagles do not.

4. If I were the owner of the Vikings, which I am not, but if I were, I'd clean some house up there in the cold country. Why he is hanging on to some of these clowns in beyond me, Mike Tice included.

5. LaDainian Tomlinson has a new NFL rushing TD record of 18 straight games. Just because the number is so in vogue with streaks in the NFL, I'll bet he gets to 21 before it ends.

6. Poor Texans. Maybe Minnesota and Houston could just swap teams, see a different set of characters lose for a while.

7. The JP Losman drafting, I can't help but harp all over a poorly planned pick, but what was Tom Donahue thinking of in April of 2004? What does does he ever think about?

8. Ricky Williams returned this Sunday. Anyone notice? Anyone care?

9. If Pittsburgh doesn't stay or get healthy, it'll be a long season in Pennsylvania as well as New England.

10. I can't help but notice how dry it has been lately. I mean, when are we ever going to get a little rain?
