A Word from The Writer:

The Monday Analysis - 15 November 2004

The World Champion Domination was in full effect at the Razor Sunday night. And the Patriots got another big divisional win with the World Champion Red Sox watching.

Idiots Parade: Pats Sox Buffalo

The World Champion New England Patriots welcomed honored guests the World Champion Red Sox at Gillette Stadium by dismantling the Buffalo Bills 29-6 Sunday night and improve to 8-1. Johnny Damon and Curt Schilling carried in the World Series trophy to 70,000 of Patriots Nation, before their brothers took care of a division rival for a season sweep of the Bills.

It was also another homecoming for former Patriots Drew Bledsoe and Lawyer Milloy, both now with Buffalo, but not that sweet. Bledsoe threw only 76 yards and 3 INTs before being replaced by rookie JP Losman, who didn't fair much better. Running back Willis McGahee managed only 37 yards. The Buffalo defense gave up two Tom Brady touchdowns (David Patten and Christian Fauria), 5 Adam Vinatieri field goals, and a clear path to the star of the show, running back Corey Dillon, who rushed for 151 yards on the night. Dillon spent time on the sideline with a nagging thigh injury, but maybe he was just trying to catch his breath.

"Corey ran hard," coach Bill Belichick said. "He made a lot of yards on his own. It's good when you're able to run well and set up those play-action passes."

"I just wanted to play," said Dillon. "I just wanted to go out there and run and help us win and do what I can do. I'm just having fun. It's been a long time since I've felt like this. We're doing things as a team, winning as a team."

Troy Brown played cornerback again, and had a retro evening. He caught a pass from Drew Bledsoe, only this time as an interception.

"I don't think Drew saw me so he threw it to (Eric Moulds) and I was there to make the pick," Brown said.

To add insult to injury, Schilling, who bought Bledsoe's Medfield home last year and bragged about not paying anywhere near the $6.5 million asking price at the time, showed up in a Brady jersey. I'll bet Drew had the thought "I'll be damned if anyone wears a Brady jersey in this house" at least once while living there.

This one wasn't even competitive. The Bills only scored from a kick off return and blew the two point conversion. The Patriots still need to work on getting the ball into the endzone while in the redzone. The five field goals helped Adam Vinatieri become the second Patriot to score 1,000 points. Gino Cappelletti was the first.

Bledsoe is slated to start next week, but his days are numbered. The Patriots travel to Kansas City next Monday Night.

Coaching Carousel Begins: Wannstedt Out

No longer head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Dave Wannstedt resigned this week after leading the team to a 1-8 start. Defensive coordinator Jim Bates is interim coach. Miami has a Bye this week.

"As you might imagine, this was not a very easy decision from a personal standpoint, but I believe it is a proper decision at this time for being a professional," Wannstedt said. "Somebody has to accept the responsibility. I am the head coach and that falls on me."

The Dolphins have been plagued with back luck this season from the surprise retirement of Ricky Williams, to David Boston's season-ending injury in the pre-season, to not having a solid quarterback to rely on. Even Dan Marino's sudden and quick in and out as head of football operations in January gave the team a black cloud.

Wannstedt met with team owner Wayne Huizenga on Monday, where Wannstedt turned in his Dolphin key chain.

Bates has been with the team since 2000, Wannstedt's first season as head coach. He is the former head coach of the USFL San Antonio Gunslingers (say thankya). His fishing trip plans for the bye week was obviously changed.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

1. Pittsburgh (8-1). They stay on top, for now. The road to the Super Bowl may go through Pittsburgh.
2. New England (8-1).  Another dominating win over a divisional.
3. Philadelphia (7-1). Bad loss to their PennState Rivals. McNabb and TO need a serious hooking up this week on Monday Night.
4. San Diego (6-3). A Bye week keeps Diego at the top of the heap.
5. Atlanta (7-2). Mike Vick show slams the once and mighty Bucs.
6. Indy (6-3). The Offensive Machine continues to roll.
7. Denver (6-3). A Bye week keeps them at the top as well.
8. Baltimore (6-3). Nice win over the Jets in overtime. They needed it to keep chasing Pittsburgh.
9. Jacksonville (6-3). Jax nearly lost it all int he fourth and fifth quarters. But they held on, which is what you need to do.
10. NJ Jets (6-3). No Pennington, and Quincy Carter can't get then the win. Jersey is dropping.
11. Green Bay (5-4). Back into the winning vibe at home, and Favre gets a late game winning drive going to get back on top of the division.
12. St. Louis (5-4). Rams bounced back against the wallop New England gave them for a big division win, where they remain undefeated.

"Our focus, my focus, for the next seven weeks will be to get better, to win football games," Bates said. "We will play hard and will step up to the task."

Wannstedt had a 43-33 record in Miami after succeeding Jimmy Johnson. He was head coach of the Chicago Bears until being fired in 1997. His head coaching record is 84-90.

There are several candidates to be the fifth head coach of the Miami Dolphins, including Bates, LSU's Nick Saban, and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis of the Patriots.

Weekend Break Down

Ravens (6-3) 20, JETS (6-3) 17 - FINAL/OT: Big loss dealt to New Jersey. They had a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a pair of Curtis Martin rushes, but couldn't gain on the Raven defense or hold Kyle Boller back. The Jets nearly won this one in regulation, but had to settle for a tying field goal when Quincy Carter couldn't get the ball into the endzone. And even first possession couldn't help them.

RAMS (5-4) 23, Seahawks (5-4) 12 - FINAL: NFC West battle is likely to come down to the wire in Week 17. The Rams bounce back from the tough home loss last week to remain undefeated in the division at 4-0.

Steelers (8-1) 24, BROWNS (3-6) 10 - FINAL: The Tour of Ohio Part 1 for the Steelers, who come up with a division win, despite threats during the week and a fight early in the game. The Browns need to do more than threaten and slap to gain any kind of ground.

FALCONS (7-2) 24, Buccaneers (3-6) 14 - FINAL: Jon Gruden isn't looking so good these days. The Super Bowl win three seasons ago is all but forgotten, and the Mike Vick show continues to dominate the field.

JAGUARS (6-3) 23, Lions (4-5) 17 - FINAL/OT: Lions, Lions, Lions. Detroit was scoreless until the fourth quarter when they fought back to tie the game at 17. These are the type of games you need to win in order to play spoiler. Detroit fought back in this one, but lost it in overtime, where Jacksonville was spoiler.

SAINTS (4-5) 27, Chiefs (3-6) 20 - FINAL: No massive scoring this week with Priest Holmes out. The Saints get a big win the maybe should not have had.

COLTS (6-3) 49, Texans (4-5) 14 - FINAL: A blowout. Peyton Manning tossed 5 TDs. There was no stopping Indy today.

Bears (4-5) 19, TITANS (3-6) 17 - FINAL/OT: Big win for Chicago, and Tennessee looks less like the dominating team they were last season.

Bengals (4-5) 17, REDSKINS (3-6) 10 - FINAL: Carson Palmer comes up big for this late game win. And the Cinci defense kept the Brunnell/Ramsey-led Redskin offense out of the endzone until the fourth quarter, but Palmer had already controlled this one.

Panthers (2-7) 37, 49ERS (1-8) 27 - FINAL: Two loser teams, but Carolina gets the win on this one.

CARDINALS (4-5) 17, Giants (5-4) 14 - FINAL: Emmitt Smith rushes for both of Arizona's touchdowns to take down the Giants. Seems like old times.

PACKERS (5-4) 34, Vikings (5-4) 31 - FINAL: Daunte Culpepper tosses another 4 TDs in this one, but the Vikes blew it inside the two minute. After tying the game, Minnesota passes on the on-side kick, forces a fumble on the return but losses the ball under the pig pile, and lets Brett Favre drive the Packers into field goal range. Game over, and the Annual Decline of Minnesota is in full effect with their third straight loss.

PATRIOTS (7-1) 29, Bills (3-5) 6 - FINAL: At 76 yards passing, and 34 yards rushing, the loaner from the Canadian Football League should just go right back.

Philadelphia (7-1) at Dallas (3-5), Tonight 9 PM ABC

Open date: Denver, Miami, Oakland, San Diego

Oddities of Week 12's Matchups

Arizona (4-5) at Carolina (2-7), 1 PM. Game for the league bottom feeders.

Detroit (4-5) at Minnesota (5-4), 1 PM. NFC North match up. Both have a chance to maintain the season upswing. A loss starts to seal the fate of the 2004 season and a loss of the playoff picture.

Pittsburgh (8-1) at Cincinnati (4-5), 1 PM. AFC North match up, and The Tour of Ohio Part II for Pittsburgh. Cincinnati can do a lot for themselves with a home win against a team most league experts think is the next coming of the Greats. Not this expert, of course, but other idiot experts.

San Francisco (1-8) at Tampa Bay (3-6), 1 PM. Jon Gruden faces a former team from the Bay Area. Both are in the middle of a disappointing season.

Tennessee (3-6) at Jacksonville (6-3), 1 PM. AFC South match up. The Titans are in need of a Steve McNair return and a win. The season is just about over for Jeff Fisher's team.

San Diego (6-3) at Oakland (3-6), 4:05 PM. AFC West match up. In the past, this would be a n easy win for the Raiders. This time, its the other way around.

Washington (3-6) at Philadelphia (7-1), 4:15 PM. NFC East match up. An old school rivalry to polish off a Sunday afternoon.

New England (8-1) at Kansas City (3-6), 9 PM. New England looks for a big Monday night road win. KC is scoring a lot of points, but will need a healthy Priest Holmes to do so.

Open Date: There are no more bye weeks in the season.

Patriots News

The Patriots and NFL Film plan to release "21," a 2-DVD set chronicling the Patriots' record breaking 21 game winning streak...Offensive tackle Lance Nimmo was signed to the practice squad...Ty Law and Tyrone Poole were out for the Buffalo game...

League News

Carolina placed Stephen Davis on injured reserve....Next week is the final week for any byes...Priest Holmes was out this week against the Saints, and is likely to be out next week on Monday Night against New England...Cowboy WR Terry Glenn is out for the season with a leg injury.

Signs of the Apocalypse

Drew Bledsoe throws an interception to Troy Brown, the Patriots receiver who is playing cornerback due to the thinness in the New England secondary. I know Drew is still upset about being traded out of New England, but now's not the time to prove he can still throw to Troy Brown.

Notes & Quotes

If you hit him high you get a penalty. If you hit him low you get a penalty. Can't even touch the quarterback now?

- Patriots Safety Rodney Harrison on the penalty for hitting Bledsoe too long. The replay showed it was a legal hit above the knee.

Drew Bledsoe's quarterback rating Sunday night was 14.3. JP Losman's was 16.7. Adam Vinatieri still has a rating of 122.9, nearly four times higher than those two other guys combined.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. Big win for the Patriots. But then again it snowed this weekend, and they are great at home in snow weather.

2. It was great to see the Patriots extend the same courtesy to the Red Sox by welcoming them to a game (a national televised game no less) after winning the World Series. This is, after all, Title Town.

3. Congratulations to Roger Clemens for winning his 7th Cy Young Award at age 42. So much for being in the twilight of his career.

4. The Carson Palmer Experience in Cincinnati is starting to take shape. Growing pains are a fact in this league, but the Bengals have their quarterback.

5. Peyton and Daunte combined for nine touchdown passes Sunday. Not unusual. Imagine an Indianapolis - Minnesota Super Bowl? Nay, never happen.

6. Once again, SI's Peter King is the Jack Ass of the Week. He considers the Steelers - the 2004 Steelers one the best teams of the last 20 years. We are only at Week 10! They were 7-1 like two other teams. They haven't done a thing yet! When will Peter King ever get a clue?

7. Brett Favre has no grace as quarterback, but he is a gunslinger.

8. Dave Wannstedt's dismissal is long in coming. He just wasn't get the wins in Miami, like he didn't get the wins in Chicago.

9. It was just a matter of time before Troy Brown snagged an interception, but here's a fun stat to look up: When was the last time a player caught an interception from his former quarterback?

10. I think the list of coaches who are going to be in the hot seat later this season is Jon Gruden. The Glazers have to do something down there. The Bucs aren't even competitive.
