A Word from The Writer: The Monday Analysis - 14 November 2005 This up and down stuff is driving me nuts. Grudge Beating: Indy Finally Wins in Foxboro Problems: The Patriots Defensive did not play hard, physical football. They played right into the Colts' hands by allowing the Colts Offense to move the chains and make big plays without the fear of being hit too hard. They let Edgerrin James run the ball. Marvin Harrison was able to make completions down field. Peyton Manning literally ran circles around defenders, rushing to make first downs. The Colts never got into long yardage situations, and had excellent field position all evening. The result: 40-21, Colts. There is never anything positive to come out of a loss (just listen to Bill Belichick's press conference - all 1:38 of it), but we'll line them up. Tom Brady had great numbers, 22 for 33 for 265 yards, 3 TDs, 121.4 passer rating. He was 10 for 10 in the first half. There were very few penalties, a huge improvement and surprise, even when the game slipped out of the Patriots' hands. No one was carted off the field with an injury, and Corey Dillon was able to pull through the entire night with a nagging ankle injury. But he fumbled late in the second quarter deep into Colts territory. the score then was 14-7 Colts, and at worst the Patriots were going to make it 14-10. The Colts were able to use most of the remainder of the half to score again, and that was the pay that really buried New England. Richard Seymour sat out his fourth game (when will he ever return?). Duane Starks had to be benched in the second half because he plays the Colts receivers (actually all receivers) too soft. Randall Gay moved from Safety to Corner and Michael Stone too the safety position. Willie McGinest never got to Manning, neither did Tedy Bruschi or Mike Vrabel. Vrabel caught an interception, his second of the season, but then the Patriots coughed it back on the Dillon fumble. Vince Wilfork showed some signs of life chasing down ball carriers in the back field, but he's slow and he got little support. Rosevelt Colvin made some key stops, but the Colts never punted until 2:30 left in the game. Asante Samuel let Marvin Harrison beat him twice on the first drive that led to a touchdown in 2:30. One was a first down, the other was the touchdown. He broke up a few other later - caulk it up as learning his lesson, but he still has yet to figure how to catch the ball, a huge playmaking problem that Rodney Harrison and Ty Law never had. It is easy to point out all the injuries the Patriots are enduring, and certainly that's an issue. They have had injuries in the past - and won three Super Bowls amidst them. The injuries this season are particularly damaging. Last season the secondary was patchwork. This season it is gone. Losing Rodney Harrison was a big hit. Richard Seymour isn't healing as fast as he should be healing, leaving a big hole up front. Kevin Faulk is still out, hoping to return for the last quarter of the season, same with Matt Light. They have Bruschi back, but he is only one player, and can't play secondary. McGinest is playing through a broken hand, but he's only one player, too. Time of possession against the Bills was a 3-1 ratio, but the Bills are a poor team, and the Patriots were able to come from behind. The Colts are far more dominating, and the Patriots dug too big of a hole and could not get out of it. There just were not enough (really any) plays made on Defense to get the Colts to hand the ball back to the Patriots Offense. Pathetic. Sickening. After a score that made it 28-14 with 5:56 left in the game, Belichick went for an on-side kick to get the ball back into the Offense's hands, trying to keep the defense on the bench who were tired and unproductive. Special Teams botched the kick, the Colts recovered the ball at the Patriots 30 yard line, great field position for what would be a field goal. 4-4 is average, and that sums it up. The Patriots have some good players, but too many better players are replaced with less talented guys. Average guys. Guys who normally spend the season third on the depth chart, on a practice squad, or at home. This Patriots team does not have the physical play like they have in the past. Too many of the hard hitters are missing, and no one is filing in the gaps. We should be lucky enough to finish average in 2005. Hanging Tough: Patriots Win in Miami Well, they stepped it up, albeit against another poor AFC East team, but you know what? A win is a win, and the Patriots have a 23-16 win over Miami on the road. "It got to be a track meet at the end," Belichick said the heavy scoring at the end. "I think this team just tries to prepare well, and go out there and play the best football over the week. It doesn't always work out that way, but that's what they try to do," Belichick said. Tom Brady was 21-36 for 275 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs with a 77.9 rating, but saved the best for the end of the game. And when there needed a scoring drive very late in the fourth quarter, it was Tom Brady balancing his 21st game winning drive towards the end. This time, he gave Adam Vinatieri a break, and found Ben Watson in the endzone for the second time Sunday afternoon, then the new hero Heath Evans ran in the two-point conversion. ''It was gritty and it was tough," said Brady. ''I think the players did a lot of soul-searching this week. I think the players really dug deep." "He hung in there and made some big plays when it counted, two nice throws to Watson," Belichick said of his sixth round gem. "As usual, Tom plays his best football when it counts the most, and I think that was true today," Belichick said after the game. While the defense still needs work, Tedy Bruschi continues to make big plays during the game, and his efforts don't go unnoticed. "I think Tedy is getting a little but better each week (football conditioning-wise)," Belichick said.
''Emotion and energy, those are two words that we wanted to bring out today," said Tedy Bruschi. ''That's why I love playing this game. It's why it's exciting. It's why it feels so good to win. Because it's so difficult," Bruschi said. Corey Dillon would start the game, but remain on the sidelines with a leg injury. Insert fresh off the street running back Heath Evans, a Dolphins throw-away, who is built like a fullback, and rushed for 84 yards on 17 carries, and the two-point conversion. Plus he had 3 receptions for 18 yards. His rushing totals were better than Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams combined. ''He's doing great and he's done great since the day that he got here," Brady said smiling. "I remember the first day at practice when we thought, 'Why did somebody release him?' He's got great vision and he's tough. He brings some toughness to the offense and he's a smart guy. We thank the Dolphins for letting him go." Tim Dwight opened the game up at the end with a 59-yard reception to move the offense into the redzone, and ultimately a Ben Watson touchdown, then the Evan two-point conversion. 23-16 New England is the final. The Patriots keep their heads above water, above mediocre. The schedule gets easier with less fortunate teams, starting with New Orleans at home next week. Now, onto the Week 10 action around the league. Weekend Break Down COLTS (9-0) 31, Texans (1-8) 17 - FINAL: No surprise. The Colts are winning, and the Texans are losing, even though Houston was hanging in there for dear life. Vikings (4-5) 24, GIANTS (6-3) 21 - FINAL: Wow, one Manning wins, the younger Manning loses a tough one at home. JAGUARS (6-3) 30, Ravens (2-7) 3 - FINAL: Hmm....ha ha ha haaaaaa...wipe-out. BEARS (6-3) 17, 49ers (2-7) 9 - FINAL: Whack! Whack! Take that, says da Bears to the the 49ers. LIONS (4-5) 29, Cardinals (2-7) 21 - FINAL: Joey Harrington just wants to remind everyone he is sill around. And Kurt Warner wants everyone to remember his career prior to Super Bowl XXXVI. BILLS (4-5) 14, Chiefs (5-4) 3 - FINAL: Whoa! How'd this happen, with JP Losman behind center after Kelly Holcomb leaves with an injury. Yikes! Patriots (5-4) 23, DOLPHINS (3-6) 16 - FINAL: One name in common with both teams. Heath Evens. Miami tossed the running back away, and since New England has everyone on injured reserve, the Patriots sign him over. Evans is built like a full back, but look at these numbers: 17 carries for 84 yards, 1 two-point conversion run. 3 Receptions for 18 yards. Yeah, over 100 yards total. This outcome was better for the Patriots. Just as ugly as the win over Buffalo two weeks ago, but we'll take it. We'll take it home. Broncos (7-2) 31, RAIDERS (3-6) 17 - FINAL: Denver blanked the Raiders 23-0 into the fourth quarter before Oakland woke to thought about playing this game. Kerry Collins: 26-50 for 310 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs, 59.6 rating. Oakland needs a quarterback. PANTHERS (7-2) 30, Jets (2-7) 3 - FINAL: Poor Herm Edwards. I love the guy. He'll never win in this league, but his post-game press conference makes you want the guy to win. He believes in his players, believes they work hard, and it sickens him to have to see the players walk off the field with a score like this, that and he hates the New York media asking why the team sucks so bad. Herm can watch football in my living room any day. He just can't coach my team. Packers (2-7) 33, FALCONS (6-3) 25 - FINAL: All right, Pack! You get a big second win this season over the very powerful Atlanta on the road. Nice! BUCCANEERS (6-3) 36, Redskins (5-4) 35 - FINAL: What a thriller. Can't wait to watch this one on NFL Network this week. Chris Simms with a late game drive to win. Extra point misses, but there is a penalty on Washington, so Jon "Kiss my ass" Gruden changes the play to go for two and the win. Mike Alstott up the middle of the crowd for the conversion. And Joe Gibbs is behind himself. SEAHAWKS (7-2) 31, Rams (4-5) 16 - FINAL: Seattle would have liked this outcome against the Rams last season, but better late then never. STEELERS (6-2) 34, Browns (3-5) 14 - FINAL: Poor Romeo. This was not his night. The Steelers had their third string QB Charlie Batch get injured, then they put in the second stringer Tommy Maddox, who is already injured has to come in. Ben Roethlisberger was even warming up in sweats on the sidelines. But they still clobbered the Browns. Dallas (5-3) at Philadelphia (4-4) Tonight 9 PM ABC

is out for the season... League Notes The Eagles announced troubled WR Terrell Owens is done for the
year. Owens was suspended in Week 9, and will remain under suspension for
three more games, then be deactivated for the remainder of the season. The
removal of Owens for the season stems from numerous episodes this year,
ranging from in-fighting with teammates and front office personnel,
derogatory remarks Owens made in an interview with ESPN.com ranging from
topics of lack of respect the Eagles had for him by not recognizing his
100th touchdown reception to his thoughts that the Eagles would be better
off with Brett Favre at quarterback. "We gave Terrell every opportunity to
avoid this outcome," said head coach Andy Reid...NJ Jets WR Wayne Chrebet
could be out for the season with a head injury sustained in Week 9 against
the Chargers. Sources say the injury could be career-ending...Priest Holmes
is again out for the season, this time with a bruised spinal cord sustained
in a head-to-head hit in Week 7. The Kansas City running back was sidelined
in 2004 with a knee injury. This new injury is not expected to be
career-ending...Chiefs running back Priest Holmes is out for the
season with a back injury... Signs of the Apocalypse Gus Frerotte tosses 360 yards against the Patriots. Has he ever tossed
360 yards against anyone? Notes & Quotes "Fourteen years in the league and I never hurt my knee." - Viking head coach Mike Tice commenting on a hit to the knee he suffered, tearing his MCL, on the sideline Sunday. Dan Marino Game Winning drives over 17 season: 39 Press Conference Lengths for Patriots in Weeks 9 & 10
Top Ten List of the Week 1. The Patriots Defense still gives up too much yardage. 437 total yard, 360 of it in the air. 2. Nice work, Tom Brady. 21 game-winning drives. 3. Tom Coughlin's post game press conference looked like an old time football coach ready to pop a blood vessel. Oh wait, he is an old time coach ready to pop a blood vessel. Calm down, Tom, before you kill yourself. 4. Jon Gruden followed Dick Vermeil's lead from last week, and went for the win on the final pay, rather than the tie by going for two. Gutsy play calling, and nice work by Chris Sims to hold the Bucs offense together. 5. Da Bears are sizzling. They even broke an NFL record with a 108 yard touchdown run after a failed point after. 6. As loud as this Terrell Owens things is, it is amazing how quiet other outgoing receivers like Keyshawn Johnson and Randy Moss have been so far. 7. The Ravens and the Jets both combined scored less that a touchdown this weekend. Maybe you ought to try a little offense, fellas. 8. Two cast off former starting quarterbacks Buffalo's JP Losman and Detroit's Joey Harrington are making some argument that they belong in this league. I still don't think they do. 9. Joe Gibbs looked beside himself at the end of the game against the Bucs. I bet he wonders daily why he ever got back into this thing. 10. Is there no stopping Indy? 14 November 2005 | ||||||||
