A Word from The Writer:

The Monday Analysis - 11 October 2004

Three overtime games and a new King of Domination Hill. Week 5 still has some winless and undefeated teams, but we’ve got to go to Gillette Stadium first for a passing of the torch.

Patriots are the best: Set a Record 19th Straight win

A 24-10 win over the helpless Miami Dolphins takes over a win streak owned by the Dolphins: 19 Consecutive wins that matter (excludes preseason).

Regardless of how you feel about this record, you have to admit that it is monumental. Even head coach Bill Belichick acknowledged it after the game.

“I told our team after the game that I was really proud of what they did,” Belichick said, his hair still damp from the Gatorade dousing by Richard Seymour and Rodney Harrison. “It is good to come out on top. But, I did tell the team that I felt they should be proud of what they accomplished and that no other team in pro football has done that. But that being said, that is not our only goal, to win four games.”

The win may have been ugly, with three receivers out of the game (Troy Brown, Deion Branch, and Bethel Johnson); quarterback Tom Brady threw only 76 yards, 7 for 19 with 2 TDs and 1 INT. The last time he’d throw under 100 yards in a game came on October 7, 2001 – against Miami. Daniel Graham and David Givens caught touchdown passes, while newly signed running back Rabih Abdullah ran for a 1-yard touchdown.

"We didn't play as good as we would like today," said Brady. "We didn't play that well on offense, but we played good defense. We held them to 10 points and we put up 24."

On Defense, the Patriots stopped Miami in the red zone several times, and with Olindo Mare out with an injury, Miami did not have a dependable kicker to make lengthy field goals if necessary.

“Defensively, they did a really good job and made a lot of big plays down there, rushing the passer, covering, goal line play,” said Belichick.

The Patriots face the Seahawks next week at Gillette Stadium, and try and keep this streak – either one – alive.

The Monday Analysis POWER Rankings

1. New England (4-0). 19 in a row or 4-0. It’s been so long since they lost people are starting to forget that feeling.

2. Philadelphia (4-0). A Bye week keeps them on top.

3. NJ Jets (4-0). It breaks my heart to see them way up top here.

4. Indy (4-1). Peyton and Co. are still a high-flying machine.

5. NJ Giants (4-1). Tom Coughlin has berated and fined his team into winning.

6. Atlanta (4-1). Losing at home to Detroit wasn’t such a good idea this week.

7. Pittsburgh (4-1). The way Ben Roethlisberger is playing, Tommy Maddox will be selling insurance again before the end of the season.

8. St. Louis (3-2). They pulled out an overtime win on the road to keep ahead in the NFC West.

9. Seattle (3-1). Losing in overtime at home against the Rams shows that the ‘Hawks are not the solid team they need to be to stay dominant down the stretch.

10. Detroit (3-1). Another road win gets them more respect.

11. Jacksonville (3-2). How do you lose to the Chargers, anyway?

12. Baltimore (3-2). Brian Billick’s Ravens are staying strong when they need to.

Oddities of Next Week's Matchups

Carolina at Philadelphia, 1 PM. Rematch of last year’s NFC Championship game. I wonder if Philly will seek revenge in “Championship Game II?”

Cincinnati at Cleveland, 1 PM. AFC North game. Battle for O-HI-O.

Houston at Tennessee, 1 PM. AFC South Game. Old Houston versus New Houston.

Miami at Buffalo, 1 PM. AFC East game for the Bottom of the Barrel.

Denver at Oakland, 4:15 PM. AFC West game. Old time rivalry that usually gets ugly.

Patriots News

Tedy Bruschi was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Buffalo game. And in typical Patriots selfish fashion, Bruschi blamed everyone else on the team for him playing well…The Patriots extended OT Matt Light’s contract to a six-year extension worth $27 million. Light received a $2.5 million signing bonus and an option bonus of $6.5 million payable March 1 of next year. He also receives salaries of $455,000 this year, $1 million in '05, a $1.7 million roster bonus before the '06 season and a $1 million salary; a $3.5 million salary in '07, $3.75 million in '08, $4.25 million in '09 and $4.5 million in '10…Special Teams captain Larry Izzo also signed an extension with a $150,000 bonus and salaries of $660,000, $665,000, and $670,000 through 2006…The Patriots signed safety Je”Rod Cherry and WR Kevin Kasper for depth.. Adrian Klemm was placed on IR and is done for the season. TE Ben Watson was placed on IR last week and is expected to be done for the year…

Monday Analysis Week Off

Due to the nuptials of the column’s only writer, the Monday Analysis will not be published next week on Monday. Instead, an edition will either come later in the week or a double edition the following Sunday.

Signs of the Apocalypse

I've seen some strange things watching this game. And the New England at Buffalo game had some strange stuff. But seeing Johnny Grier, the Referee, go out in the first quarter on a foot injury is just about not what I ever expected to see.

Top Ten List of the Week

1. 19 straight.

2. Congratulations to the Red Sox for making it to the ALCS for the second straight year. I hope you guys didn’t hurt yourselves with all that champagne the other night.

3. Miami has more problems than Ricky Williams right now, but Williams says he wants to come back and play. That guy can’t make up his mind. And the Dolphins can’t win ballgames.

4. Duante Culpepper and his five touchdowns were the difference maker in Sunday’s win over the Texans.

5. David Carr and the Texans may have lost on Sunday, but Carr is coming into his own as a quarterback. They’re still far off from being a playoff team, but there is hope in sight.

6. Marc Bulger leads the Rams back from a 17-point deficit to beat NFC West rival Seattle, showing he and the Rams are still not to be taken lightly.

7. It’s good for the Patriots to acknowledge Number 19, but in the same motion, went on to looking at next week’s game. Now with the media hype done until the streak is done (who wants to write a story about a team beating their own record?), the Patriots can go back to talking about football again.

8. Mike Martz, when he celebrates during the game, is one disturbing fella.

9. How is it that the Chargers are winning games?

10. Pretty odd how the loser of tonight’s game will have a record of 1-4.
