A Word from The Writer: The Monday Analysis - 10 October 2005 The Sox exit and the Patriots re-enter. First, the farewell to those out of the Fenway. Sox Sweep into an Early Exit to the Offseason The dream is over. The Red Sox are officially former World
Champions as they are swept by the The Sox lost their big lead to New York for the AL East in the final games of the season, and seemed to retire right then and there. Offensively, the Red Sox were not the offensive machine during the playoffs that they were during the season, but that didn't matter. The pitching stunk all season and continued its poor performance in the playoffs. ''Obviously, they were the better team," said pitcher Curt Schilling who spent a lot of the 2005 season with an injury to the ankle that gained him so much attention in the 2004 post season. "The argument's over. They came in and beat us. I certainly didn't expect to be on a postseason team and not get the ball, but it was my own fault. I struggled all year and then we went down to the last game of the season and I had to pitch." For many in the clubhouse, the Red Sox ride is over. Contracts are up, and may not be renewed, such as for centerfielder Johnny Damon, a free agent, and first basemen Kevin Millar. ''These were the best three years of my life," said Millar. ''I loved it. No matter what, it's been a blast. No one can ever take away what we did last year. This year, we fought. We just weren't the better team." ''I think it's been awesome," said Damon. ''I'll remember how our players loved the city and how the city loved us and how they enjoyed us." Others, like Bill Mueller, Mike Timlin, and possibly the trade-seeking Manny Ramirez could be out of Fenway for good this off season. There's a t-shirt out there that says "Wait until last year." At least we've had a last year. Thanks for the ride, but now the ride is over. Patriots Bounce Back with Rocky Win in Atlanta It was a win the Patriots needed. Sloppy or not. There are still problems with these Patriots, who won 31-28 off another late fourth quarter Tom Brady drive to set up another Adam Vinatieri Add 'em and Leave game winning field goal. But they walked out of the Georgia Dome with a big win. Now for the problems. Both Atlanta and New England were missing big players. The Patriots missed Richard Seymour on defense, and the Falcons were missing QB Michael Vick, who insisted all week he would play, but an evaluation Sunday morning turned the decision otherwise. Atlanta turned to Matt Shaub to mind the helm, and he played well and kept the Falcons competitive. The Patriots secondary gave up too many long plays. Even more penalties were tossed around giving the Patriots poor starts on offense and the defense gave Atlanta first downs left and right. Head coach Bill Belichick was not happy about them in his post-game press conference. "There were a lot of flags out there, today," he snarled. "There was a lot of flags. Let's leave it at that." The Patriots committed 11 penalties for 83 yards, a couple of them were offensive pass interference penalties. Now, I've said it in the past few weeks that the officiating has stunk towards the Pats. How many offensive pass interference penalties have you ever see? The Patriots got a lot of help with the running game. Corey Dillon had 23 carries for 107 yards, the first time he hit the century mark this season. Earlier in the week, Brady spoke out against Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer for making statements against the Patriots saying they had suffered a lot of injuries as the great teams do. The statement didn't settle well with any of the Patriots, and apparently the head coach took reference. "Don't tell us about injuries," Belichick said. "It's a part of the game." The Patriots nearly blew it with a 28-13 lead, and the defense let up big plays. The Falcons marched down for a score from an interception, then another with a two-point conversion to tie it up. But they left far too much time on the clock for Tom Brady and march it down for a score on Adam Vinatieri's leg - again. "This is a team that believes a lot in themselves," Belichick said, "even if a lot of people don't." One more tough road trip next week to Denver before the Bye.
Weekend Break Down PACKERS (1-4) 52, Saints (2-3) 3 - FINAL: Whoa my God! The Packers have a win! The Packers have a win! Favre and the Pack nearly won a down-to-the-wire on Monday night, but came up short. Evidently, the train kept rolling. LIONS (2-2) 35, Ravens (1-3) 17 - FINAL: Maybe the Lions just needed Charles Rogers out of the picture. Brian Billick is in a lot of trouble. His offense is lacking a quarterback, and now his defense stinks, too. But the Lions have quarterback problems, too. Four Lions touchdowns were by the run. Harrington tossed one, got 2 INTs, and a lousy 34.1 rating. Yuck! JETS (2-3) 14, Buccaneers (4-1) 12 - FINAL: What was the problem with New Jersey? No Testeverde. Incredible. Bummer for Gruden who gets a lousy first loss. He held Cadillac Williams out with foot and hamstring injuries, and you can feel the pain from here. BILLS (2-3) 20, Dolphins (2-2) 14 - FINAL: JP Losman is benched, and he has to have lost his job. Kelly Holcomb bounces the Bills back in a big way with a good divisional win at home. Miami committed 18 penalties for 102 yards that didn't help either. BROWNS (2-2) 20, Bears (1-3) 10 - FINAL: Romeo Crennel is at .500, nice win over the hapless and apparently hopeless Chicago. Trent Dilfer leads the Browns with 2 TDs in the fourth quarter to Antonio Brant for the win. Seahawks (3-2) 37, RAMS (2-3) 31 - FINAL: Rematch of last years divisional playoffs goes to the Seahawks. Maybe Mike Martz should have stayed in the hospital. Patriots (3-2) 31, FALCONS (3-2) 28 - FINAL: Tom Brady was near perfect -22-27 for 350 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 140.4 rating - in this imperfect showing by the Patriots. Too many problems on defense, but they held in there and pulled out a win at the end. The Falcons were without Mike Vick, but Matt Schaub filled in just fine. Titans (2-3) 34, TEXANS (0-4) 20 - FINAL: Newsflash the day after Week 17: Dom Capers and the Houston coaching staff are gone, and the front office is shopping for a new starter over David Carr, who was sacked seven times. The good news is that Jarrett Payton (son of Walter) scored his first NFL touchdown. Colts (5-0) 28 - FINAL: 49ERS (1-4) 3 - FINAL: A blow out, but Manning No. 2 didn't get a touchdown until the fourth quarter and that was after tossing 2 INTs. The 49ers just stink. Alex Smith starts his first and tosses 4 INTs. Let's move on. COWBOYS (3-2) 33, Eagles (3-2) 10 - FINAL: Not in the grave yet. Drew Bledsoe throws for 3 TDs, two to Terry Glenn. Dallas had lost nine of the last ten to Philly. No today. BRONCOS (4-1) 21, Redskins (3-1) 19 - FINAL: A failed two-point conversion keeps the Broncos in the lead. Washington suffers their first loss of the season. Panthers (3-2) 24, CARDINALS (1-4) 20 - FINAL: Here's a fun fact: Arizona has only won games in Mexico. JAGUARS (2-2) 23, Bengals (4-0) 20 - FINAL: The Bengals just about had this one, but a turnover with under two minutes to go ended it, and the undefeated mark. Top Ten List of the Week 1. It is really nice to see the Patriots win and care that they wanted to win. 2. The Packers look to be back on track. I'm not sure what was in the water at Lambeau in the month of September, but it appears that the filters are on. 3. See ya next year, Red Sox. 4. How about Roger Clemens and the Astros? Longest playoff game in MLB history (18 innings). Clemens comes in on two days rest because he was the only pitcher left, throws three scoreless innings and Houston eliminates Atlanta to go back to the NLCS. Bad weekend for Atlanta. 5. While the Colts are undefeated, Manning No. 2 is still thin, and they haven't played anyone challenging. Or should I say, they still have yet to play in Foxboro. 6. I called it last week. How long would it take for Vinny Testverde to take over the starting role in New Jersey? Answer is ten days. 7. Next season look for a new look in Houston. New head coach, new coaching staff, new quarterback. Chris Palmer is luck y to get out of there when he could. 8. The Cowboys are a Machine. I am telling you, Dallas is a Machine. 9. Hey, Tom Donahue of Buffalo. Hate to tell you I told you so, but I told you so. 10. Have no fear Alex Smith. You have an entire career to not toss 4 INTs in your first NFL game. 10 October 2005 | ||
